Transfers - Gossip Shop: Silva lining for LiverpoolEurosport - Wed, 13 May 12:44:00 2009

Such is Xabi Alonso's popularity on the Kop these days, were he to leave it would take a big-name player of a certain quality to appease Liverpool fans.

With Arsenal set to ramp up their efforts to take him to the Emirates Stadium this summer, Alonso's departure from Anfield is becoming ever more likely.

The Spain international's price may have risen a couple of million pounds after a stellar season at Liverpool, but the Gunners know they need a player of quality and experience if they are to avoid the torture of another trophy-less campaign.

Alonso ticks all the right boxes and the Star reports that Arsene Wenger is ready to splash £18 million to get his man and boost his side's chances of actually winning something next season.

So where could Liverpool spend that kind of money? Step forward Valencia's David Silva. Valencia are so badly in debt that they may be forced to cash in on their best players during the close season.

The Spanish club owe around £100m and have had to put plans for a new stadium on hold, but with the likes of Silva, David Villa and Raul Albiol in their ranks, a large chunk of that debt could be wiped out with big money summer deals.

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is keen to take Silva to Merseyside and has sent his chief scout to Valencia to table a £15m take-it-or-leave-it offer.

Benitez would prefer to avoid a bidding war for Silva, but whatever happens, a deal for the Spain winger is unlikely to become as drawn out as the transfer of Carlos Tevez is threatening to get.

Clearly inspired by this site's very own photoshopped effort of Frank Ribery, Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka sporting Real Madrid shirts (click on the link below today's far more realistic shot to take a look our aspiring Picasso's effort), the Daily Mail has plumped for a shot of Tevez in a Liverpool shirt on its back page today.

There he is, the little striker grinning from ear to ear with a clean-shaven Benitez (which, weirdly, now looks rather odd - and to think we mocked him when he opted to grow his facial hair) next to him, wrapping a fatherly arm around his shoulders.

And the pair look happy, almost like it's meant to be.

Maybe it is, but there is one man who will do his utmost to make sure a similar photo never comes to light in reality - Sir Alex Ferguson.

Historically, Ferguson does not like - nay, allow - players to move from Old Trafford to Anfield. Most recently, Gabriel Heinze found this out and the Argentine hard man had to settle instead for Real Madrid.

Indeed, the last player to make the trip down the M62 was Phil Chisnall all the way back in 1964, when Fergie was still a prolific St Johnstone striker.

But the paper itself admits the photo is nothing more than a wind-up - "our little bit of photo trickery is still certain to make Sir Alex's blood boil" - and even if Liverpool were seriously considering a mega-deal to take Tevez to Merseyside, they would face stiff competition from another of United's main rivals - Manchester City.

City have emerged as a prime contender to win the race to sign Tevez after his agent Kia Joorabchian revealed his man may be willing to forgo Champions League football if the club has big aspirations and lots of money.

GS can't think of any other club Joorabchian could possibly be talking about. Although it remains to be seen how Fergie would view a move across town, even though relations between the two Manchester sides are not quite as strained as between United and Liverpool.

Elsewhere, Fulham keeper Mark Schwarzer is the subject of some considerable interest from Aston Villa and Tottenham , while Everton are keen on signing Cardiff midfielder Joe Ledley for £3.5m and Chelsea stopper Michael Mancienne on loan.

Blackburn have made enquiries into the possibility of bringing Barcelona whizzkid Bojan Krkic to Ewood Park on a loan deal and on-loan Portsmouth winger Jermaine Pennant is open to offers - from anyone, really - when the Liverpool-owned ace's contract expires at the end of the current campaign.

And finally, Steve Bruce has resigned himself to Antonio Valencia 's departure this summer, with Manchester United and Real Madrid set to battle it out for the Ecuadorian's signature.

Xabi Alonso veut rester
