| Reds to renew Simao chase Jun 13 2007 by James Pearce and David Prentice, Liverpool Echo LIVERPOOL boss Rafa Benitez is set to turn his attentions towards signing Benfica winger Simao Sabrosa after Lyon slapped a £17million price tag on Florent Malouda. The Reds had been hoping to complete a £8million swoop for France international midfielder Malouda who has signalled his intention to move to the Premiership. But with Chelsea and Arsenal also believed to be interested in the 27-year-old, Lyon chairman Jean-Michel Aulas is keen to engineer a bidding war. Aulas said: “I'm waiting on a call from an English club so we can sort out a meeting. Story continues “The transfer could move forward if there is an offer that comes close to the price I've fixed. “On players’ values, I seldom get it wrong and today Malouda is worth £17million.” The Reds are unlikely to consider paying such an inflated price for Malouda, especially as Simao would be available for around £11million. The 27-year-old Portugal international has been strongly linked with a move to Anfield in the past and is again the subject of intense transfer speculation in his homeland. Lyon and Paris Saint-Germain have made contact with the Benfica captain’s representatives but he has told them he isn’t interested in making the switch to France. England remains his preferred destination but Benfica don’t want to sell and have made it clear that it will take a big offer to prise him away. Club president Luis Filipe Vieira said: “We are not interested in selling Simao and will only study the subject if an incredible offer arrives. At this moment we have not received anything.” Simao, who has scored 81 goals in 213 games for Benfica, is under contract under 2012. |

| Time to show Rafa the cash Jun 13 2007 Letters, icLiverpool & Liverpool Echo IT'S NOW three weeks since Rafa Benitez asked the new owners to show him the money, and still nothing has happened. It now looks like we can't afford the A-listers like Eto'o, Tevez or Villa. Instead we'rebeing linked with average players like Malouda, Forlan and Bent. We're also being told we'll have to sell the likes of Bellamy and Kewell before we buy. What's going on? Does Rafa have any money to spend? This is starting to feel like last summer and the summer before. I hope things work out, but the signs are ominous. David Powell, LiverpoolStory continues ADVERTISEMENT ALTHOUGH it's great that Gerrard and Carragher have committed their futures to the club, I'm worried that Liverpool have not yet signed any new players. Manchester United have spent big money already and even Chelsea have signed players on Bosmans. There have been loads of rumours about Henry being seen at Melwood but I can't see that being true. Players we are being linked with like Malouda and Mancini would be great signings but to be linked with a £16million move for Forlan? Let's hope not. I would be happy with Diego Milito but I don't think he's the answer to our attacking problems. Christopher Gray, AintreeFANS are getting concerned but we must not forget that we do have new players in Leto, Lucas and Voronin. They may not be household names, but we should not pass judgement on them too fast. We are aot too far away and it would be better for us to spend big on world class wingers as opposed to megabucks on big name forwards. Roger Dutton, LitherlandWITH regard to the fans who are dismissing Andriy Voronin before he has even kicked a ball for Liverpool, remember what people said when we announced we were buying Ian Rush. 'He's too lightweight, he isn't quick enough for the First Division and he is too thin,' they said. The only part that was true was that he looked as if he needed a good feed. Rushie proved us all wrong so never judge a book by its cover. Terry Smith, AnfieldCHRIS BASCOMBE has to be Liverpool FC's most valuable asset. He gives a consistently outstanding performance, win, lose or draw. His perceptive reporting - currying no favours and without the use of spin and smokescreens - hits the nail on the head every time. He voices every concern the majority of fans feel and his Football Echo 'Blood Red' column of June 9 should be made compulsory reading for the new owners and hierarchy of LFC. Ronand Eddy Evans, Formby Quelques commentaires. |
