A testament to Raffa'a persistence he has been tracking Agger for a year now and he finally gets his man. This young man has also demonstrated that he wants to play for Liverpool not just the club that offers him the most money.

Give him time to adjust to the prem and I am sure he will be a valuable addition to the squad.

Yes, obviously, he could have earn more money because some other clubs were chasing him, like the Spurs and also, a few months ago, Bayern and Juve.

So, he's here because he wants to play for us and it's very important, it's a very positive sign concerning the lad mentality.

REDS COMPLETE AGGER DEAL
Paul Eaton 12 January 2006

Rafael Benitez's search for a new centre half is over after the Reds today confirmed the signing of Daniel Agger from Brondby on a four and a half year contract.

The highly rated Danish defender becomes Benitez's second major signing of the transfer window after Jan Kromkamp's arrival last week.

The 21 year old centre back completed his medical yesterday and officially put pen to paper on his new Liverpool contract this morning. He will wear squad number 5 at Anfield.

Agger will train with his new team-mates at Melwood today as the Reds prepare for Saturday's Premiership clash with Tottenham.

Benitez has been trailing Agger for some time and is confident the player will put immediate pressure on Jamie Carragher and Sami Hyypia for a place in the first team.

"Daniel is a player we have been following for a long time," revealed Benitez today.

"We first spoke to Brondby about the player when we were in Monaco playing the Super Cup final. At that time, their chairman said he wasn't for sale.

"We scouted Daniel for a long time but then he picked up an injury. When he returned to fitness we watched his first game back and we knew he was at the kind of level we require, even though he played only 25 minutes.

"We've been told he's one of the best centre-halves in Denmark for 20 years. A lot of scouts have spoken highly of him and there has been lots of interest from other clubs.

"People will remember he played particularly well in an international against England earlier this season. We'd already watched and asked about the player before then.

"That match surprised a lot of people, but it confirmed to us he could play at a particularly high level, which is why we've continued to follow him."

So what qualities does Benitez feel Agger will bring to his side?

"I wouldn't say he was a particularly aggressive style of player," he replied.

"I think he is a very clever type of defender. His positional sense is very good, for example, and he reads the game well. Ofcourse, there are areas he needs to improve, but he is young and we will help him.

"He will be an option for the first team within a short space of time. First he will need to improve his physical condition but then he will put both Sami and Carra under pressure for their place. This is an area where we've had no competition until now.

"He can't play in the Champions League, but when you sign a player who's only 21 years old, he is for the future of the club, not for a competition in which we have a maximum of seven games left.

"If we have to play seven more games in Europe without players who are cup-tied, it will be a welcome problem."

AGGER CLOSE TO NEW DEAL
Posted 01/05/09 13:37

Daniel Agger is believed to be close to signing a new long-term contract with Liverpool.

The Danish central defender has been involved in a lengthy saga over his future, and it was feared he was waiting to buy himself out of the final year of his contract.

He has been linked with AC Milan, Juventus and Barcelona in recent months with talks seemingly at a stalemate with Liverpool.

It had been thought that Agger wanted a wage rise from £50,000 a week to £70,000 a week.

However, his agent Per Steffensen has recently visited Liverpool for discussions with manager Rafael Benitez and it is thought that a deal is now on the table that suits both player and club.

Benitez said: "These conversations have gone really well and we are very close. Maybe we will soon have a solution."

Liverpool recently agreed new deals with Steven Gerrard and Dirk Kuyt while verbal agreements have been made with youngsters Nathan Ecclestone, Peter Gulacsi, Krisztian Nemeth and Nabil El Zhar.

AGGER CLOSE TO NEW ANFIELD DEAL
Paul Eaton 01 May 2009
Rafael Benitez today confirmed Daniel Agger is close to agreeing a new contract at Anfield.

The Danish defender's future has been the subject of speculation for many months, but a deal is now close which will ensure the 24-year-old commits his future to the Reds.

"It is very close," confirmed Benitez today. "We are just waiting on the small details but it is nearly done. We have to wait a little bit longer but we are very close.

"He is very happy here and I have always supported him. Hopefully it will be done."

Benitez also brushed off speculation in this morning's newspapers linking Javier Mascherano with a move away from the club.

"I was talking with Javier earlier and everything is okay," he added.

"He is really pleased here because he knows the fans love him. He can't avoid big clubs asking about him because he is a top class player, but he is very happy here."

Meanwhile, Steven Gerrard has overcome a groin strain and will be available for this weekend's clash with Newcastle United at Anfield
