Anfield-bound: Danish defender Daniel Agger

Liverpool are close to completing a deal for Brondby defender Daniel Agger, according to reports in Denmark on Thursday night.
State broadcasters DR say Agger's agent Per Steffensen was in Liverpool on Wednesday and the centre-back has now agreed personal terms with the European champions, who have only to agree a fee with Brondby - expected to be around £5.5million.

Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry told DR: "He is a central defender and we need at least one defender so we have a list of possibles. His name is on it - but that's all I want to say at this moment in time."

The 24-year-old has been a long term target for Benitez, who has been seeking cover for Jamie Carragher and Sami Hyypia.

Benitez has already snapped up Dutchman Jan Kromkamp and Paul Anderson.

Winger Simao Sabrosa, another of Benitez's long-term targets, could also be on his way out of Benfica after the Portuguese club took Laurent Robert from Newcastle.

Kromkamp passed his medical and completed the final details of his swap deal with Josemi, who moves in the opposite direction to Villarreal in his native Spain.

The Dutch international could even make his debut at Luton on Saturday after rules governing the eligibility of new signings playing in the FA Cup were brought into line with the Premiership.

The 24-year-old right-back quit Villarreal having only joined them from Dutch club Alkmaar in the summer after failing to settle in Spain. Benitez revealed "he has had trouble learning the language".

The 17-year-old Anderson's move was agreed several weeks ago but could only be confirmed once the transfer window reopened.

His switch to Anfield from Hull saw England Under-21 midfielder John Welsh make his loan a permanent deal with the Tigers.

Anderson, a winger, will join Benitez's new-look elite reserve squad which trains at Melwood alongside the senior players.

Brondby accept they will eventually have to allow Liverpool target Daniel Agger to leave the club.

Agger is on Rafa Benitez's wanted list as the Reds boss looks to sign a centre half during the January transfer window.

Reports in Denmark have suggested that the young stopper has already concurred on personal terms with the European champions.

Liverpool are now understood to be haggling with Brondby over a fee for Agger, who is one of the brightest defensive talents in Europe.

Brondby would prefer to retain the Denmark international for as long as possible and would love to resist Liverpool's overtures.

But club director Per Bjerregaard concedes that top players will always want to try their luck in a major European league.

"As a football person I would like him to play for the club as long as possible," Bjerregaard told BT.

"But I also know that good players have to go at one point.

"We are in a good position in case we want to sell, but we will see."

It would seem that the player has told the club he wants to go to Liverpool. This is exactly what was needed now his club need to accept the price we have offered. If we are being asked more than 5.5 Million Rafa will not be happy. The fact that he has re-declared his interest in the Spanish pair of central defenders I think is no more than a negotiating ploy.

It seems Spurs are showing some interest in Agger, this is the last thing Raffa needs as it would only drive the price up unless of course Agger refuses to go there. Raffa must be feeling very frustrated by now. January dealing is never easy.

Agger closes in on Liverpool move

Agger is regarded as one of the most promising defenders in Europe
Denmark defender Daniel Agger arrived at Liverpool on Wednesday to discuss personal terms on his move from Brondby, according to reports.
Liverpool have refused to comment but the Danish club told BBC Sport that Agger did not join his team-mates at a training camp on Wednesday.

The 21-year-old is a long-time Reds target but the move almost fell through when Brondby raised their price.

However, the two clubs are now thought to have agreed a £5.8m fee.

If the transfer goes ahead, Agger will become the second defender to join Liverpool in January after the capture of Jan Kromkamp from Villarreal.

The Dane is due to join up with his country's under-21 squad for a two-week training camp in Chile on Monday.

Tottenham, Juventus and Bayern Munich were also thought to be interested in Agger, who played in Denmark's 4-1 thrashing of England in August.

Anfield bound Agger jets in Jan 11 2006

EXCLUSIVE by Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

DANIEL AGGER arrived at Anfield today to complete a £5.8m transfer from Brondby.

The Danish club gave the European Champions permission to meet the 21-year-old international defender after Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry flew out to Denmark earlier this week.

A fee was finally agreed this morning, allowing Agger the chance to become the second Anfield recruit of the transfer window, subject to a medical.

Rafa Benitez believes the youngster can offer an instant threat to the places of Sami Hyypia and Jamie Carragher.

Liverpool have agreed a deal with Brondby for Daniel Agger, with the defender on Merseyside to undergo a medical.

The European champions have held a long-term interest in the Denmark international as Rafa Benitez looks to add a centre half to his squad.

Benitez has now advanced that admiration after The Reds agreed a deal in principle with Agger's club Brondby.

It is rumoured that Liverpool will stump up £5.8 million for the defender, who played against England in a friendly at the start of the season.

The finishing touches are being put to the transfer and Benitez outlined how long he has been tracking the 21-year-old.

"Daniel is a player we have been following for a long time," Benitez told the Liverpool Echo.

"We first spoke to Brondby about the player when we were in Monaco playing the Super Cup final. At that time, their chairman said he wasn't for sale.

"We've been told he's one of the best centre halves in Denmark for 20 years. A lot of scouts have spoken highly of him and there has been lots of interest from other clubs.

"People will remember he played particularly well in an international against England earlier this season. We'd already watched and asked about the player before then.

"That match surprised a lot of people, but it confirmed to us he could play at a particularly high level, which is why we've continued to follow him."

Agger has missed Brondby's training camp in Spain to complete his switch to Anfield, with Benitez enthusing over his impending recruit.

"He will be an option for the first team within a short space of time," added Benitez. "First he will need to improve his physical condition, but then he will put both Sami and Carra under pressure for their place. This is an area where we've had no competition until now.

"He can't play in the Champions League, but when you sign a player who's only 21-years-old, he is for the future of the club, not for a competition in which we have a maximum of seven games left."

Liverpool's deal for Agger is likely to disappoint another Premiership club - believed to be Tottenham - who were also chasing the stopper.

Brondby director Per Bjerregaard told TV2: "It is correct that at least two Premier League clubs are interested in Agger.

"But who it is, I don't want to reveal."

Great news and at least that is one more piece of Raffa's revolution in place.

Now for the right sided midfielder. at least now he has got his central defender he knows how much money he has left.

Malgré son jeune âge 21 ans , et son manque d'expérience en PL, je ne pense pas que Raffa le destine à la réserve. Il sera le plus souvent titulaire, pour emplacer , à terme, Sami.

This means that Carra and Sami both to have be looking over there shoulders now as there is someone who can come in and take their place. Also if they miss a match through injury or a booking we have cover. We also have someone with a bit of pace at the back as well. I would expect him to replace Sami fairly often. He is a fully fledged international despite his age.

Gonzalez hasn't been granted a work permit and a deal where he is loaned to a Spanish club for six months is being looked at but nothing is settled yet. Liverpool were looking at a loophole in the UK law which would possibly allow Gonzales in but I am not sure if they want to antagonize the authorities.
