David Thompson Retires

David Thompson prend sa retraite Davidt10

Former Liverpool, Portsmouth and Bolton Wanderers midfielder David Thompson has decided to hang up his boots at the age of 30 due to a long standing knee injury.

Thompson, 30 started his career off with Liverpool in 1996 and made his football league debut as a substitute as the Reds beat Arsenal 2-0. He made loan appearances with Swindon Town before joining Coventry City in August 2000 after 56 appearances and five goals with the Anfield club.

And, despite being named as ‘Player of the Year’ at Highfield Road he failed to keep them up and in 2001 they lost there Premier League status and have yet to return. A move to Blackburn Rovers a year later resurrected his career and found him in the England squad but failed to make the starting eleven.

In January 2006 he moved to Wigan Athletic and was instrumental in there bid for Premier League safety which they achieved with high honours - however he missed a League Cup runners-up medal with the Latics as he had already played for Rovers in a previous round - Manchester United beat local rivals Athletic 4-0 at the Millennium Stadium.

Six months later he moved to Portsmouth and after only a handful of starts found himself at Bolton Wanderers last January; again he made too few starts due to constant injury and was released at the end of last season.

Unfortunately for Thompson (due to fitness) no club made a move for him but was handed the opportunity to train with Sheffield United at the beginning of this season with what looked like a likely full transfer with the Blades - however it was not to be as he retired from the game.
