Manchester City have made an approach for Glen Johnson, the Portsmouth right back who had been expected to move to Liverpool this summer. The 24-year-old, who has also attracted interest from Chelsea, his former club, signed a 4½-year contract in January after being pursued by Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool.

portsmouth serait d'accord de vendre glen johnson a chelsea pour environ 20 millions

PORTSMOUTH are ready to accept a bid from Chelsea for England full-back Glen Johnson that could rise to nearly £20m.

But Manchester City are ready to mount a late bid to hijack the deal with a more lucrative offer to try to convince him to move to Eastlands.

Now Johnson must decide whether to return to the club he left under a cloud three years ago, move to City or look elsewhere – and there are plenty of options.

Liverpool and Tottenham both want Johnson and have made either offers or firm enquiries.

And there is also interest from abroad with Bayern Munich hoping to lure him to the Bundesliga.

But Chelsea are favourites to re-sign Johnson after letting him move on loan to Portsmouth in the summer of 2006 before selling him to the South Coast club a year later for just £4m.

Since his move to Fratton Park, Johnson’s career has flourished both at club and international level.

His man-of-the-match display in England’s World Cup qualifier victory over Andorra highlighted why he is poised to become one of the hottest transfer properties this summer.

Even though Arabian property tycoon Sulaiman Al Fahim remains on course to complete the £60m purchase of Portsmouth within the next few weeks the club are resigned to losing Johnson – even though he signed a new long-term contract only last season.

When he put pen to paper on a four-year deal it at least gave Pompey the security of a bumper payday when the defender, 24, eventually moves on.

Now that appears to be sooner rather than later.

There is thought to be an agreement in his contract that will allow Johnson to quit Fratton Park once an offer in excess of £12m has been received.

Now sources suggest the bids received from Liverpool and from moneybags Manchester City are already well above that.

But Chelsea are believed to be the highest with an initial £16m followed by add-ons that could take the eventual figure close to £20m.

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp, who signed Johnson for Pompey, would also like the full-back at White Hart Lane but is likely to find himself outbid by Chelsea.

The only concern for Johnson is that during his first stint at Stamford Bridge he did not have the best of times.

But now he is rated as arguably the best right-back in the Premier League and has cemented his England career.

That should assure him regular football at Stamford Bridge – but City might be a more appealing prospect.

Rafa Benitez confident of beating Chelsea for full-back

GLEN JOHNSON - going
06/06/2009

LIVERPOOL are confident of beating Chelsea to the signing of £10million Glen Johnson.

Kop boss Rafa Benitez will lodge a bid when the Portsmouth full-back (left) returns from international duty with England.

Benitez is keen to land Johnson, 25, after suffering a major setback when Villa's Gareth Barry chose Manchester City.

Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti is also interested but Benitez hopes Johnson's previous unhappy spell at Stamford Bridge will influence his decision. Benitez can guarantee Johnson he will be a first-choice next season.

Anfield's debt-ridden finances are not a stumbling block as Benitez is still assured of a big transfer kitty and knew the situation when signing a new five-year deal.

Pompey defender Johnson looks the right man for Liverpool boss Benitez
By Sportsmail Reporter

Rafa Benitez will step up his efforts to finance a deal for Glen Johnson over the weekend and hopes to unveil the England right back as his first summer signing in the next few days.
Manchester City and Bayern Munich have enquired about Johnson, but Chelsea are Liverpool's chief rivals for his signature after having a £17million bid accepted by Portsmouth, as revealed in Sportsmail last week.
However, Benitez remains confident of seeing off the 24-year-old's former club after it emerged that Anfield would be his preferred destination.
Raising the necessary finance appears to be the Liverpool manager's main stumbling block, but it is understood he is ready to utilise an outstanding amount from Peter Crouch's move to Portsmouth - thought to be around £7million - to top up his available funds and match Chelsea's £17million offer.
That should be enough to push a deal through for a player who has become Benitez's No 1 target in recent weeks.
Johnson's attacking forays down the right for Portsmouth and, in particular, England have convinced Benitez of his worth, but his arrival will leave little leeway for further strengthening.
Benitez has also lodged a £2m bid for Johnson's Fratton Park team-mate Sylvain Distin, but will have to consider selling before making any other signings.
He could raise badly needed revenue by sacrificing Yossi Benayoun after reports in Israel that Tottenham, as well as Barcelona, had made an approach for the midfielder.
Benayoun has been priced at £12m for foreign clubs but would cost even more for any of Liverpool's Barclays Premier League rivals.

Je sais pas si c'est un avantage mais Johnson a quand même joué 3 ans à Chelsea.

Sinon financièrement, c'est clair que ça va être compliqué. Chelsea et City peuvent surenchérir alors que nous on va avoir de la peine à suivre.

Quick line from The Daily Mail, who report that Liverpool are stepping up their bid for Portsmouth full-back Glen Johnson over the weekend.

They claim Rafa Benitez hopes to have the deal all sorted and wrapped up within the next few days, after having a £17million bid accepted by Portsmouth.

Man Citeh and Bayern Munich have both apparently asked about the full-back, but it seems Liverpool have the upper hand because Pompey still owe them £7million from the Peter Crouch sale last summer.

The paper claims Rafa has also made a £2million bid for Sylvain Distin, but may have to sell before he buys anyone else.

Meanwhile, The Daily Mirror claims Liverpool have made a £6million offer for Alvaro Negredo, but face competition from Valencia.
