TRIPLE BOOST FOR LIVERPOOL Jamie Carragher is set to join Steven Gerrard in signing a new contract at Liverpool by the end of the week.
The popular 27-year-old defender is expected to sign a two-year extension to his current deal at Anfield, which has two years remaining on it.
The news will delight Reds fans, who have already seen Gerrard perform a U-turn on his decision to quit the club this week. He is due to sign a four-year contract on Friday.
"We have been talking with Jamie Carragher and we expect the contract to be signed before the end of the week," said Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry.
"He was outstanding for us last season and is clearly a big part of our plans."
Parry also confirmed experienced German midfielder Dietmar Hamann has signed the one-year extension to his contract, while defender Djimi Traore has penned "a long-term deal".
He told the club's website: "It has been a busy summer so far but we are happy with what we are doing.
"Didi has signed his contract, we signed Djimi Traore on Wednesday and of course we have already made a number of new signings since the end of last season."
Like Gerrard, Carragher was an inspirational figure in Liverpool's stunning Champions League triumph in May and would have been an overwhelming favourite to take over the Reds' captaincy had manager Rafael Benitez taken up the midfielder's offer to stand down.
With three more of his star names signed on, following confirmation of four new signings on Monday, Benitez's squad is taking shape for the new campaign, which starts on Wednesday with a Champions League qualifier against Welsh minnows Total Network Solutions.
