Liverpoolfc.tv are saddened to report the death of former Red Alf Arrowsmith - a striker who was a key member of Bill Shankly's first title-winning side.
Arrowsmith, 62, passed away quite suddenly earlier this week.
A record-breaking marksman as a schoolboy, the popular Mancunian joined Liverpool from Ashton United in 1961 and went on to make 55 first team appearances during a seven-year Anfield career.
In that time he netted 24 goals and is best remembered for his contribution to the club's First Division Championship success in 1963/64.
Bill Shankly once remarked that Alf was 'born to score goals' and during the run-in of the aforementioned campaign the burly centre forward certainly did that, notching 10 goals in a prolific nine-game spell.
He was on the scoresheet in the title-clinching 5-0 rout of Arsenal and earlier that season famously scored four in a FA Cup defeat of Derby County.
A bright future beckoned but a knee injury, sustained in the 1964 Charity Shield against West Ham was to unfortunately cut him down in his prime.
He managed to battle back but was unable to recapture the hot goalscoring form that had shot him to prominence and he subsequently faded from the first team scene.
In 1968 he moved on to Bury and later turned out for Rochdale and Macclesfield.
Despite continuing to live in Manchester, Alf remained a passionate Liverpudlian and when Liverpoolfc.tv had the pleasure of interviewing him in November 2003 he spoke very fondly of his time at the club.
He'll be sadly missed by all of his former team-mates and our deepest sympathies go out to all of his family and friends at this sad time.
Alf Arrowsmith - 1942 to 2005 - RIP
