FINNAN COULD MAKE PREMIER LEAGUE RETURN WITH HULL
Daily Mirror 15 January 2009

Hull City boss Phil Brown is in talks with Steve Finnan about a return to the Premier League in a cut-price £1million deal from Spanish side Espanyol.
The former Liverpool defender could sign for the Tigers by the end of the week after being offered a stunning £25,000-a-week deal, although he has asked for time to give an answer.

Finnan was wanted by Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp but he was looking at a loan deal and Espanyol refused. Redknapp was concerned about Finnan's injury record and is also considering other targets for one of his many problem positions.

Espanyol would like to recoup the £1.5m transfer fee they paid Liverpool, but Hull have made the best offer and are keen to do business now.

Brown wants Finnan as he is finding it hard to agree a fee with Sunderland for Paul McShane, who is on loan with the Tigers.

Espanyol accept Newcastle bid for Finnan

According to news coming out of Spain, Hull target Steve Finnan is set to become Joe Kinnear's first signing after his club Espanyol accepted a bid of £1.3 million from Newcastle United.

Reports in the British press suggested that the former Liverpool man was headed for the KC Stadium, but Espanyol did not agree to the terms offered by The Tigers, and accepted an improved bid from The Magpies.

Joe Kinnear has been scouting the league looking for an experienced right-back to step-in in place of the injured Habib Beye, and Steve Finnan seems to fit the bill perfectly.

Espanyol's decision came after being dissatisfied with Hull`s proposal to pay the transfer fee in installments, over three years.

There were rumours circulating around that Finnan had failed a medical at the KC Stadium, but that has been deemed to be an inaccurate assessment of the situation by the Spanish club.

Newcastle Finnan bid accepted - Hull offer rejected

Espanyol have accepted a bid from Newcastle United for Steve Finnan, but the Premiership side are believed to have subsequently withdrawn from any possible deal.

Reports in the British press today had previously claimed that Hull would complete the signing of former Liverpool defender Steve Finnan on Friday morning.

It had been suggested that the 32-year-old had discussed personal terms and taken a medical at Hull on Thursday after the club reached agreement with the Barcelona club.

However, Espanyol are not satisfied with Hull’s proposal to pay a transfer fee in installments, over three years, and have rejected the offer from the Premiership club.

Ex-Ireland international Finnan is understood to be keen on a return to Britain after enduring a difficult five months since leaving Anfield in the summer.

There are at least five English sides showing an interest in signing Finnan but, at present, a bid from Newcastle United, in the region of €1.5 million, is the only offer to have been accepted by Espanyol. However, with Finnan currently in the UK in order to hold talks with any prospective clubs, the player expects to have his future sorted within the next 24 hours and further developments are anticipated.
