Player Notes:
George was one of the great goalscorers in Liverpool's very early days. He burst onto the scene in the 1895-96 season with a staggering 25 goals from only 20 league matches as the club won the Second Division championship. Although he never managed to keep the same goals-per-game ratio for the rest of his Anfield career, he still finished with a very creditable 49 from 79 League matches, a further 6 in the FA cup and an additional 3 in the Test matches of the time, which determined promotion and relegation in much the same way as the play-offs do today.
Allan moved to Celtic in May 1897, but returned to Liverpool less than a year later. Sadly, he died of tuberculosis when he was only 24 years old.
