Five for Robbie…
Twelve years ago today, Robbie Fowler scored all five goals as we thumped Fulham in a League Cup Second Round tie at Anfield, having already scored on his club debut in the first leg. Only four other reds have scored five times in the same game.

A Czech treble…
Patrik Berger bagged his first hat-trick in English football as we beat Chelsea 4-2 at Anfield eight years ago today, with Robbie Fowler netting the other late on. Chelsea’s Bernard Lambourde had been sent off shortly before the half-hour mark, with the score still level at 1-1.

Double treble…
On this day in 1940, Denis Westcott scored four goals and South African outside-right Berry Nieuwenhuys netted a hat-trick as we trounced Chester 9-1 in a Wartime League fixture at Anfield. Bob Paisley and Drury netted the others.

Happy birthdays…
Short-lived reds centre-back Mauricio Pellegrino is 34 today. He arrived at Anfield with an impressive reputation, having previously won the Spanish League three times and the UEFA Cup, as well as appearing in two Champions League Finals. However, he rarely impressed in his thirteen reds games, and is now with Deportivo Alavés. 1980’s reserves winger John Jeffers is 37 today. He never made our first-team, but was a regular fro Port Vale after moving there in December 1988. He also turned out for Shrewsbury Town and Stockport County.

Scottish forward Dave Wright was born in Kirkcaldy exactly a century ago. He bagged 35 goals in exactly a century of reds games after signing from Sunderland in March 1930. He remained at Anfield until July 1934, when he joined Hull City for £1,000. 1950’s inside-forward Alan Banks was born in Liverpool on this day in 1938. He struck six times in just eight games for the reds, but enjoyed far greater success in the lower divisions with Exeter City and Cambridge United, netting more than two hundred goals.

Mixed derby fortunes...
Jack Cox, Charles Hewitt, Joe Hewitt and Alex Raisbeck all netted as we won 4-2 at Goodison Park on this day in 1907. Five years later, we lost 2-0 in another First Division meeting, this time at home. However, Arthur Metcalf and Harold Wadsworth struck as we lost 4-2 in a Wartime League fixture at Anfield in 1918.

Lee’s debut...
Forward Lee Jones made his reds bow eleven years ago today, as a substitute for Steve McManaman in our 4-1 League Cup win at Burnley as we reached the Third Round 6-1 on aggregate. Jamie Redknapp bagged a brace with Robbie Fowler and Nigel Clough also scoring. We also won at Burnley on this day in 1968, when Peter Thompson and Geoff Strong struck in our 4-0 top-flight win, after Roger Hunt had bagged a first-half brace.

In comes Roy…
Reds stalwart Roy Evans signed on at Anfield as a professional forty years ago today the day after his seventeenth birthday. One of the club’s greatest servants, he served as fan, left-back, reserves coach, Assistant Manager and then finally the top job for four years. He only made eleven first team appearances before injury cut his career short.

A rare excursion up front…
On this day in 1899, centre-half Alex Raisbeck played the first of two matches at centre-forward, in our 2-1 defeat by Notts County at Trent Bridge, with Jack Cox netting our consolation.

Big post-war wins...
We thumped Grimsby Town 6-1 at Blundell Park on this day in 1946, thanks to a brace apiece from Albert Stubbins and Billy Liddell, a Willie Fagan penalty and a Jack Balmer goal. We hit five without reply at home to Doncaster Rovers in a Second Division fixture on this day in 1957, with Antonio Rowley and Jimmy Melia both netting twice and Louis Bimpson also on the scoresheet. Six years later, Ian St. John, Ian Callaghan and Peter Thompson netted as we beat Aston Villa 5-1 at Anfield, with the scoring rounded out by a brace from Roger Hunt.

Underneath the floodlights...
We won the first leg of the Floodlight Challenge Cup on this day in 1960, beating Everton 3-1 at Anfield. The return was not played for another year, when we drew 2-2 to claim the trophy for the second and final time.

Deano for Wales…
Ex-red Dean Saunders scored the consolation nine years ago today as Wales lost 3-1 in Cardiff to the Netherlands in a World Cup qualifier. Also in World Cup action that day were ex-red Jim Magilton and future red Gary McAllister.
