SAO PAULO, July 15 (Reuters) - Sao Paulo supporters went on the rampage after their team won the Libertadores Cup on Thursday night, smashing newspaper kiosks, destroying telephones and fighting with police, television pictures showed on Friday.
Metro stations and buses were also vandalised as thousands of Sao Paulo supporters converged on the Avenida Paulista, a principal thoroughfare which has become a favourite celebration point for the fans of local soccer teams.
Sao Paulo beat fellow Brazilians Atletico Paranaense 4-0 at the Morumbi stadium in the second leg of the final to complete a 5-1 aggregate win and clinch South America's top club tournament for the third time.
Brazilian media reports said the mood turned sour soon after the final whistle as fans poured into the avenue and bar and shop owners lowered their shutters.
Television pictures showed supporters throwing stones and running amok.
A bank's windows were smashed while kiosks, litter bins, public telephones and bus shelters were destroyed and metro stations, petrol pumps and buses were vandalised.
One picture showed a dozen fans jumping and singing on top of a packed public bus as it drove away from the centre.
Around 300 police were called and used rubber bullets and teargas to disperse the fans, who fought back with stones and bottles.
"I've never seen anything like this in clashes with supporters, especially with just one set of fans," said a policeman who asked not to be identified but said he had more than 20 years' experience.
There was also trouble before kickoff as police clashed with hundreds of fans who were unable to get into the stadium because of chaos at the turnstiles. Tear gas was also used on that occasion.
The Morumbi has been plagued by trouble in the last month.
Argentina's River Plate complained their coach was stoned by Sao Paulo fans as it drove to the Morumbi before a semi-final first leg tie last month.
Later, riot police clashed with River Plate fans on the middle tier while Sao Paulo supporters on the upper tier pelted the combatants with water and other liquids.
River at one stage threatened not to take the field, claiming their fans had been victimised and one of their directors had been wrongly arrested. They also claimed that Sao Paulo had failed to provide a police escort for their bus.
There was more trouble when tickets went on sale for the final, as the queues quickly went out of control.
Police were again called and supporters claimed they had to wait up to nine hours to buy tickets
