RAFA: IT'S CRAZY WE HAVE TO PLAY TONIGHT
Paul Eaton 21 March 2006
Rafael Benitez will make full use of his squad tonight as he looks to emerge from a 'crazy' schedule of two games in three days by guiding the Reds to the semi-finals of the FA Cup.
The Liverpool manager makes no secret of the fact that he doesn't agree with the FA's decision to stage this year's quarter finals over four midweek nights to give the England team a week extra to prepare for this summer's World Cup finals.
After playing at Newcastle on Sunday afternoon, the Reds now have to recover in time for tonight's testing Cup clash at Birmingham as Benitez looks to record a victory over the only team he has failed to beat since arriving in England.
Robbie Fowler is ineligible tonight but those players left out at Newcastle are expected to return. That is likely to mean starting places for Steve Finnan, Fernando Morientes, Xabi Alonso and Luis Garcia.
He said: "It is impossible - you cannot prepare a team to play 100 per cent two days after a fixture. That is why we used a different system on Sunday and we will use some different players at Birmingham.
"After you play a game you often feel fine on the first day but it is on the second day that things are worse and your muscles are sore. On the third day you are maybe back to 70 per cent but you cannot play at the same level.
"You need time to eat properly, rest and recuperate. This game has come too quickly. It's crazy
"There is also a greater risk of injuries when players have to play two games in three days."
