Injured Given 'to miss six weeks'
Given felt the full force of a Marlon Harewood challenge
Newcastle United expect goalkeeper Shay Given to miss six weeks of the season after undergoing surgery to repair a stomach tear.
Given was rushed to hospital with abdominal pains after he collided with Hammers striker Marlon Harewood towards the end of their 2-0 win at West Ham.
Newcastle club doctor Roddy McDonald said: "Shay was found to have a small perforation of his small bowel.
"He underwent surgery to repair this and that was successful."
Given is expected to leave hospital in five days.
It was initally thought Given was just badly winded but an ambulance was soon called after the match as the Republic of Ireland keeper complained of pain.
Steve Harper stepped in for Given at Upton Park and he is expected to continue to deputise for the forseeable future.
United travel to Liverpool on Wednesday before entertaining Everton on Sunday.
Given's injury will rule him out of the Republic of Ireland's Euro 2008 qualifiers against Cyprus in Nicosia on 7 October and then at home to the Czech Republic four days later.
