Friday, 25th August 2006Sami Hyypiä will move into Liverpool’s all-time Top 50 for League appearances if he plays against West Ham United on Saturday. This will be his 254th League match for the reds.
The Finnish international signed for Liverpool back in May 1999 for the princely sum of £2.5m from Dutch side Willem II. He made his debut in the opening game of the 1999/2000 season away at Sheffield Wednesday, as part of a defence that also included Vegard Heggem, Jamie Carragher and Dominic Matteo. The game not only saw Sami’s debut, but also those of Titi Camara, Dietmar Hamann, Vladimír Šmicer and Sander Westerveld. Hamann’s debut was cut short with ankle ligament damage in the first half, while Camara marked his debut with the winning goal six minutes from time.
Sami did not miss a single League game in his first season, and scored twice - one against Manchester United in a 3-2 home defeat, and the first goal in a 4-1 win against Sheffield Wednesday, also at Anfield. In the six subsequent seasons he has only missed a total of fourteen League games, again being ever-present in 2003/04 when we clinched fourth at the end of the season. He has so far notched eighteen times in League outings, with Bolton Wanderers and Manchester United being the only sides he has struck more than once against.
Hyypiä now draws level with Robbie Robinson on 254 League games. Robinson moved to the reds from his hometown club Sunderland in February 1904. He was top scorer as we won the Second Division title the following season, and also helped us claim the First Division championship in 1906. During the latter stages of his time with the reds, he moved into the half-back line but still bagged a total of 63 goals in those 254 League games, including all four goals as we thumped Leicester Fosse 4-0 in a Second Division fixture in October 1904.
Sami is currently a full League season worth of Premiership outings behind his central defensive partner, Jamie Carragher, who ranks joint #41 on 291 matches. However, Sami is nearly 400 games behind our leading League appearance maker, Ian Callaghan, who played 640 times, and whose record is unlikely ever to be matched. Robbie Fowler is just two games behind Sami so will hopefully shortly join the mighty Finn in the top 50.
