On this day in Liverpool history - 10th July
Happy birthday Mark…New reds winger Mark González is 22 today. The Chilean international winger was actually born in Durban, South Africa. He is still awaiting his work permit, and spent much of last season at struggling Real Sociedad, nabbing five goals in twelve La Liga games.
The final piece of the jigsaw…Nine years ago today, Paul Ince was signed by Roy Evans from Internazionale for £4.2m. His Anfield career started well, but then faded, and he was moved on by Gérard Houllier as he had become a disruptive influence in the dressing room. He had struck seventeen times in 81 reds games during his two years at Anfield.
Beating Bayer...Five years ago today, we faced Bayer 04 Leverkusen in a pre-season friendly in Lustenau, Austria. We won 3-2 thanks to a late deflected Jamie Redknapp free-kick, with strike pairing Michael Owen and Emile Heskey also netting. This was new signing John Arne Riise’s first outing for the reds.
Five new faces unveiled…Chief Executive Rick Parry and manager Gérard Houllier introduced new signings Steve Finnan, Harry Kewell, Anthony Le Tallec, Florent Sinama-Pongolle and coach Christian Damiano at a press conference at Anfield three years ago today.
Bowyer on his way...Four years ago today, Phil Thompson spoke of the controversial proposed arrival of Lee Bowyer: “He is a player we have admired for some time. Nothing has been finalised at the moment but discussions are ongoing. The way he gets forward and scores goals from midfield is similar to the way Terry McDermott used to play.”
Jones departs...Reserves defender Barry Jones moved to Wrexham on a free transfer on this day in 1992. He had only ever made one senior appearance for the reds, in our 1-0 UEFA Cup defeat against Kuusysi Lahti in Finland.
New faces in action at Melwood…Bruno Cheyrou and Alou Diarra both trained with their new reds team-mates at Melwood for the first time four years ago today.
Ex-reds on the move...Ex-loanee keeper Alec Chamberlain joined Watford from Sunderland for £40,000 exactly a decade ago. He has so far played 287 times for them. Rigobert Song joined Galatasaray from Racing Club de Lens for £1m two years ago today, helping them to reclaim the League title last season.
Andy Parkinson, who was in the victorious FA Youth Cup squad in 1996, joined Grimsby Town on a free transfer from Sheffield United two years ago today. He played 95 times for the Mariners, notching thirteen times, before moving on to Notts County last month.
