A NUMBER of Liverpool players who didn't appear in the World Cup began pre-season training at Melwood yesterday.
Fabio Aurelio's move to Liverpool hasn't quite yet been formalised, but his four-year contract is expected to be penned in the next few days, while Mark Gonzalez is scheduled to discover tomorrow at his work permit hearing whether he can begin his Anfield career.
Liverpool's England contingent have been given a fortnight's holiday. Gary Ablett was at Melwood to begin his role as new reserve team manager.
As part of their preparations for the new campaign, Liverpool visit Wrexham on July 15 and Crewe on July 22 before setting off for their regular Austrian training camp at Bad Ragaz on July 25.
Benitez's side will play Mainz on August 4 and hope to have another two friendlies organised for the stay in Austria before returning for the Champions League third qualifying round first leg on August 9 and the Community Shield clash with Chelsea at the Millennium Stadium on August 13.
Meanwhile, reports in France yesterday claimed Liverpool are among a clutch of clubs chasing Nicolas Anelka, who spent six months on loan at Anfield in 2001-02.
The striker is reportedly ready to leave Turkish side Fenerbahce, with Werder Bremen and Lyon also suggested to be interested. However, an asking price of £8million makes any firm interest from Anfield unlikely.
David Raven has joined Carlisle United. The 21-year-old has agreed a two-year contract with the League One side.
