Death of a legend...Five years ago today, legendary forward Billy Liddell died in Liverpool of Alzheimer’s disease. He joined the reds in July 1938 while still only sixteen, and left the club 23 years later, having struck 228 times in 534 games. His only club honour was the League title in 1947, although he also played in the FA Cup Final three years later.
Stan returns...Steve Staunton re-signed from Aston Villa on a free transfer eight years ago today. He made 58 first-team appearances during his two and a half years back at Anfield, before returning to Villa Park again.
Warnock sent to Coventry…Stephen Warnock joined Coventry City on loan three years ago today. He played 49 times for the Sky Blues as they finished twelfth in the First Division, becoming their Player of the Year. He finally made the break-through at Anfield under new boss Rafael Benítez, and has so far bagged one goal in sixty reds games.
On the same day, ex-reserves forward Jon Newby joined Huddersfield Town on a free transfer from Bury. He failed to find the net in fifteen games for the Terriers, and is now back at Gigg Lane.
Bruno departs...Bruno Cheyrou joined Olympique de Marseille on loan two years ago today. He had struck five times in 48 games in his one year at Anfield, and is unlikely to be seen in a red shirt again. He bagged one goal in nineteen League games for the Mediterranean outfit, and then spent last season on loan with Girondins de Bordeaux.
Happy birthday Doc…Club doctor Mark Waller is 49 today. A reds fan since moving to Liverpool from his native Northamptonshire in 1977, he has been in this role for more than a decade now, and is also the doctor for the England Under-21’s.
Post-Second World War keeper Charlie Ashcroft was born in Chorley eighty years ago today. He appeared 89 times for the reds before joining Ipswich Town in June 1955.
Souness on the south coast...Exactly a decade ago, ex-reds player and boss Graeme Souness was appointed Manager of Southampton. He was in charge at The Dell for less than a year, during which time he guided them to just one point clear of relegation from the top flight, and famously signed Ali Dia, George Weah’s alleged cousin.
Pelle off…Mauricio Pellegrino signed for Deportivo Alavés on this day last year, having been released two weeks earlier. The Argentine centre-back had rarely impressed in his thirteen reds games, after signing from Valencia on a free transfer in January. He had arrived at Anfield with an impressive reputation, having previously won the Spanish League three times and the UEFA Cup, as well as appearing in two Champions League Finals.
All change at Crewe…Four years ago today, Crewe Alexandra released Phil Charnock, who had been the youngest ever red to appear in European competition, back in 1992. He had played 183 times for the Alex, and moved on to Port Vale later that summer.
Red on the committee…Reds Director Noel White was re-elected as Chairman of the FA’s International Committee three years ago today. The former Liverpool Chairman, who has been on the Board of Directors at Anfield for twenty years, was confirmed in the post for a further year, having first been elected in 1994.
Jones on the move…Former reserves forward Lee Jones joined Barnsley from Tranmere Rovers on a free transfer six years ago today. He took over the number eight shirt vacated by Craig Hignett, making an instant impact at Oakwell by scoring the winning goal against Norwich City in his first game. He went on to net eight times in 48 games for the Tykes, as he endured a spell of niggling injuries.
