ANFIELD MOURNS FORMER RED ROWLEY
Mark Platt 05 May 2006
Liverpool Football Club is today mourning the sad passing of former inside-right Tony Rowley.
Rowley, 76, signed for the Reds from Stourbridge in October 1953 and famously netter a hat-trick on his debut against Doncaster Rovers on the opening day of the 1954/55 season.
The majority of his Anfield career was to be spent in the Second Division though. His finest season at Liverpool came in 1957/58 when he registered 16 goals in 24 league appearances but he'd struggled to hold down a regular place in the side and was sold to Tranmere for £3,500 in March 1958.
In total he made 61 games appearances and scored an impressive 38 goals during his four-and-a-half year spell with the club.
Born in Wales, but of Italian extraction, Rowley's full name was Antonio Camillio and he later achieved the unique distinction of being capped for his country while playing for Tranmere in the Third Division.
He also played for Birmingham, Bangor City, Northwich Victoria and Mossley.
On behalf of everyone at Liverpool Football Club, Liverpoolfc.tv would like to offer their deepest sympathies to Tony Rowley's family and friends at this sad time.
