Jamie Carragher this evening climbed to #7 in our list of all-time European appearances, with his 66th game in continental competition at home to Total Network Solutions. Meanwhile, Steven Gerrard’s hat-trick lifted him to equal seventh in the list of Liverpool’s top European goalscorers in history.
Carragher draws level with 1960’s right-back Chris Lawler, whose 66 European games included the European Cup Winners’ Cup Final in 1966 and both legs of our UEFA Cup Final seven years later, as we claimed a European trophy for the first time. The Silent Knight bagged eleven goals against continental opposition, something Carragher is still waiting to do.
If Jamie plays in the return at Wrexham’s Racecourse Ground he will move to joint sixth alongside Irish wing wizard Steve Heighway, with his sights set on several players above him in this ranking if the red shave another successful season in the Champions League. In fact a trip all the way to the Final in Paris next May will see Carra move to within touching distance of the club’s all-time record European games, as he would reach 84 games.
Sami Hyypiä is also fast moving up the list, and is just three European matches behind his central defensive partner, with Steven Gerrard also in the club’s top ten.

Gerrard’s treble took him to twelve goals in Europe, which brings him alongside Robbie Fowler and fellow European Cup winners Kevin Keegan and Ray Kennedy. He only needs one more goal, perhaps in Wrexham, next week or in the second qualifying round, to draw level with 1970’s midfielder Jimmy Case and striker Emile Heskey. If he keeps up his scoring form, Michael Owen’s reds European goalscoring record could even be under threat within the very near future.
