Go-ahead for park facelift
Apr 15 2005
By Claire Burke Daily Post Correspondent
A START on the refurbishment of Liverpool's historic Stanley Park is expected to be given the go-ahead today.
Plans are being drawn up on the basis that the facelift for the Victorian park will accommodate Liverpool FC's new stadium.
The new Anfield ground is part of multi-million pound restoration plans for the park and the surrounding area.
The aim is to revitalise the park by attracting more users and making it safer.
Work improving the park's football pitches will begin if the council's executive board today approves work costing £275,000 over two seasons.
The first part of the work will need to start soon so it can be completed by late August for the next amateur football season.
Many of the pitches are used for the junior league and the restoration will benefit young footballers.
The move begins regeneration of Stanley Park, but the city council will have to wait for Liverpool FC's decision about the new stadium before the rest of the park's refurbishment goes ahead.
Liverpool FC are in negotiations over finance with North West Development Agency (NWDA) and will decide later this year if they plan to build a new stadium in Stanley Park.
If the club goes ahead with the proposed stadium, it will put an end to speculation that Liverpool FC and Everton FC are to share the same stadium.
The design of the proposed stadium, which would be built opposite Anfield Park, would strengthen security in Stanley Park.
Liverpool FC's new home would provide the site with CCTV coverage and every day usage at the west end of the park.
Cllr Warren Bradley, executive member for Leisure, Sports and Culture, said last night: "We have to work hand in hand with the football club in this.
"We want to do work which will re-populate the park and the proposed stadium would definitely bring people in. In the meantime, the council is working with local residents to find out what they want from the park's redevelopment.
"It is important to get families in the park and regenerate it in a similar way to how it was done at Calderstones Park."
Plans to revitalise Stanley Park will be done in several phases and includes work on the Gladstone Conservatory and Lakes.
