Michael Shields today won a key battle in his fight for freedom after the High Court told justice secretary Jack Straw he could grant a pardon.
The 22-year-old Liverpool fan is serving a 10-year sentence for the attempted murder of a barman in Bulgaria in 2005, but has always maintained his innocence.

High Court judges have now ruled that UK ministers have the power to issue a pardon to Shields despite the conviction taking place abroad.

Mr Straw previously insisted he did not have such powers.

Standing outside the family's Liverpool home, Shields' father, Michael, said: "Jack Straw is now the man with the key to the door and I'm asking him to get my son out."

Liverpool Football Club supported Shields earlier this month with a Kop mosaic versus West Ham.

MICHAEL Shields was today set to be freed from jail after he was finally pardoned by Justice Secretary Jack Straw.

The 22-year-old has won his four-and-a-half-year fight to clear his name after a dramatic Government U-turn on his case.

In July, Mr Straw ruled he was not convinced the Edge Hill student was “morally and technically” innocent of the attempted murder of a Bulgarian waiter in 2005.

But today he announced that new evidence has convinced him to release Michael.

Campaigners who have fought for his release were gathering at the Shields family home in Edge Hill to celebrate with mother Maria and father Michael Snr.

It comes after Mr Straw held last-ditch talks with Michael’s parents and City Labour leader Joe Anderson at his constituency office in Blackburn on August 28.

The ECHO understands new evidence presented to the secretary of state for justice at the meeting has led to his re-think.

Mr Straw has also come under increasing pressure from Merseyside MPs and crucially from Britain’s leading unions.

TUC leader, Southport-born Brendan Barber, also wrote an open letter to Mr Straw calling for him to free Michael, and labelling the case a “shocking miscarriage of justice”.

Cllr Anderson said: “This is the news we have all been waiting so long for. At last an innocent man is being freed from prison for a crime he did not commit. It hasn’t come a moment too soon but we’re delighted.”

4 ans pour rien c'est lamentable

Si je comprends bien, c'est une espèce de grâce?? Donc il n'est pas innocenté, et il ne faudra même pas compter sur un dédommagement?

Déjà, rien que le fait qu'il soit libre, c'est un grand soulagement
Vraiment, la justice ne fait pas toujours tres bien son travail.

A chaque fois, qu'il y a erreur judiciaire, je pense toujours à Patrick Dils, 15 ans en prison pour un meurtre qu'il n'avait pas commis. On a beau lui avoir versé 1 million d'euros, l'argent n'arrange rien dans ces cas là.

Il aurait sans doute préféré ne jamais etre accusé et ne pas toucher cet argent.

Une bonne nouvelle aujourd'hui en tout cas!!

Ah c'est donc lui le fameux Michael Shields. Avec toutes ces affaires de meurtre au UK en ce moment, celle-ci était passée inapercue. Au début je croyais que Michael Shields était le terroriste lybien libéré pour cause de cancer,rien à voir!
L'Habeas Corpus, c'est périmé ?

Il étais avec sa famille hier à anfield .

En tout cas bonne nouvelle qu'il aie été libéré, mais malheureusement, même si il va re4evoir des dommages et intérets, ça n'effacera pas l'injustice et toute la tourmante que lui et sa famille ont pu vivre. Il a passé 4 années des plus importantes de sa vie en prison et malheureusement l'argent ne peut pas réparer ce préjudice.

4 ans c'est enorme en plus,incroyable de payer pour quelqu'un d'autre!
