Prime Minister Gordon Brown hears plea for Hillsborough files
Apr 17 2009 by Rob Merrick, Liverpool Daily Post
SPORTS Secretary Andy Burnham carried a clear message from Anfield to the Cabinet as it met in Scotland yesterday.
And the Prime Minister and Cabinet colleagues agreed to explore lifting the 30-year restriction on secret documents after a plea from Liverpool-born Mr Burnham.
It could mean key organisations – including South Yorkshire Police, Yorkshire Ambulance Service, South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service and even the Home Office – revealing all information still under wraps.
The full trawl of documents would determine whether there should be a further inquiry into crucial, unanswered questions.
The Cabinet agreement to hold “further discussions” delighted Mr Burnham, who raised the issue after experiencing the full anger of Hillsborough mourners who vented their frustration at Wednesday’s service.
It is also a victory for Garston MP Maria Eagle, who has consistently accused South Yorkshire Police of “a conspiracy to cover up” its responsibility for the tragedy.
Earlier this week, Meredydd Hughes, South Yorkshire’s chief constable, promised to make available all documents “not subject to legal privilege” – but the ministers believe this does not go far enough.
Mr Burnham said he could not reveal exactly what was said confidentially at Cabinet, but added: “There will be further discussions about disclosing all documents.
“I don’t want to raise false hope, but I am pushing it forward on the principle that, if there is information held – and I simply don’t know – then it should be disclosed.
“To be honest, I’m sticking my neck out, but the Prime Minister is a football man and he understands why I feel so strongly about the importance of how events unfolded in those early days.”
The keen Everton fan was visibly moved when chants of “Justice for the 96” interrupted his speech, as he explained he was representing the Prime Minister.
Ms Eagle also hailed the discussions, saying: “It’s very promising, because I’m convinced there is further documentation, particularly held by the police. There is more of a story to be told.”
