Cut-price return to Spain for Morientes
By Oliver Kay
LIVERPOOL last night agreed to sell Fernando Morientes to Valencia in a cut-price £3 million deal after a hugely disappointing spell on Merseyside. The Spain forward arrived at Anfield in a £6.3 million move from Real Madrid in January 2005, but Rafael Benítez agreed to accept a substantial loss on the 30-year-old after his failure to adapt to the English game.
Morientes claimed a fortnight ago, before the FA Cup Final victory over West Ham United, that he expected to see out the remaining two years of his contract with Liverpool, but his subsequent omission from Spain’s squad for the World Cup finals prompted a rethink. Having learnt that he was not in the club’s plans for next season, Morientes informed Benítez that he would be willing to return to Spain.
Amadeo Carboni, Valencia’s new sports director, is understood to have negotiated directly with Benítez and, after failing with an initial offer of £2.7 million and a subsequent attempt to include Marco Di Vaio as a makeweight in a deal, the Spanish club secured an agreement last night.
Morientes and Gines Carvajal, his agent, have already agreed personal terms, although Liverpool are likely to have to contribute a portion of the player’s wages for the next two years as a result of him taking a pay cut.
Benítez will now turn his attention to strengthening his strike force. He hopes to buy two new forwards — with David Villa, of Valencia, Dirk Kuyt, of Feyenoord, and Jermain Defoe, of Tottenham Hotspur, among his possible targets — but the immediate focus is on a right winger, with Daniel Alves, of Seville, the principal target.
