Reds in new bid to land winger

LIVERPOOL-bound Mark Gonzalez could end any lingering doubts about his work permit application by starring in Chile's international friendly in Ireland tonight.
The Reds today confirmed their renewed bid to secure the necessary documents to play the £2m winger will be made on June 1.
Manager Rafa Benitez hopes the process will prove more of a formality than a year ago, when the 22-year-old's request to play in England was rejected.
Gonzalez has already shown his class since recovering from injury, but a good showing at Lansdowne Road will undoubtedly help his cause.
Anfield chief executive Rick Parry says this year's application will be much stronger on Gonzalez's behalf.
"There are many different factors this time," said Parry.
"Firstly, we're signing Mark on a permanent deal, whereas a year ago it was initially a one season loan.
"He's also fully fit having recovered from the serious injury he has this time last year,and Chile have also broken into the world's top 70 in the FIFA rankings.
"We'll be making the new work permit application on June 1."
The department of education and employment usually defer the decision to a specially convened football panel consisting of former players or officials within the game.
While there is more optimism Gonzalez will get the green light this time, the body's contentious decisions in the past means nothing will be taken for granted, and the South American may yet have to employ 'Plan B' and continue his pursuit of a European passport.
Meanwhile, Espanyol have targeted Paco Herrera for the role of director of football.
Herrera leaves Anfield on July 1 after a major contribution as part of Rafa Benitez's backroom team.
Valencia are the latest Spanish side to be linked with Fernando Morientes.
It's understood the Spanish forward's agents are in discussions ahead of a possible
£3m transfer.
Benitez's pursuit of striking replacements hasn't yet yielded a number one target, although Dutchman Dirk Kuyt has urged Liverpool to reignite their interest in him.
Kuyt is highly rated by Benitez, but he was overvalued by Feyenoord last summer. Benitez has more interest in him than many of the English strikers mooted recently.
However, the manager's immediate priority is Brazilian right midfielder Daniel Alves, from Seville.
It's understood
Alves wants to move to Anfield, and Benitez is keen to tie up a £7m deal quickly.
