Stevie to become LFC’s Premiership number five
Steven Gerrard is set to enter the club’s all-time Top 5 for the number of Premiership games played, assuming the skipper turns out at West Ham United on Wednesday evening. This will be his 231st game in the top-flight for Liverpool, drawing him level with former captain Jamie Redknapp.
Steven has struck 35 times in his 230 Premiership games to date, with his eight goals so far beating his previous best League goalscoring seasons of seven in both 2000/01 and 2004/05. He played twelve League games in his debut season, 1998/99, with his best Premiership seasons in terms of number of games played being 2002/03 and 2003/04 when he appeared in 34 of our 38 games. He is on course to feature in 33 Premiership matches this season.
John Arne Riise will also enter the Top 10 if he appears at Upton Park, as he is due to play his 170th League game for the reds, drawing him alongside ex-red Danny Murphy. It is likely to be a momentous evening for Sami Hyypiä as well, as he is due to make his 250th League outing, a milestone that Robbie Fowler may also reach for the reds this season.
Vice-captain Jamie Carragher is firmly established as the player with most games for us in the Premiership, although these 287 games are a long way short of our overall League record, held by Ian Callaghan with 640 appearances. In fact, Carra only ranks at #42 in our all-time list of League matches played.
