Steven Gerrard will be hoping his busy season lasts almost exactly a year, which would see England playing in the World Cup final. The Liverpool captain kicked off the season on July 13 in 2005 as The Reds had to qualify early in the UEFA Champions League in a bid to retain their trophy won so gloriously in Instanbul in May.
Should England make it all the way to the World Cup final on July 9 it would mean almost a full 12-month season for the driving midfield man, but he would be more than happy to end this season on the same glorious note as the last.
Undoubtedly the highlight of Gerrard's career to date was that remarkable comeback on May 25, 2005, when Rafa Benitez's side came back from the dead to rescue a 3-0 half time deficit against the mighty Milan to claim a fifth European Cup on penalties.
Almost unbelievably though, Gerrard was again on the verge of joining Chelsea in the summer, just as he had in the summer of 2004. It seemed as though his future had been sealed after winning the Champions League, but a delay in signing a new deal made him question his Anfield future.
It all ended happily for Reds fans though, and he maintained his position as the heartbeat of a Liverpool side continuing to improve under Benitez.
Despite his continuing brilliance for his club, England, by his own admission, has not yet seen the best of Gerrard.
A problem has been that he has often been deployed on the problem left side of England's midfield, although Sven Goran Eriksson seems to be settling on pairing of Gerrard and Frank Lampard in the centre.
Gerrard, who will turn 26 just before the finals, is as good as they come when on song, with his marauding runs from midfield a trademark of his all-action style, although the touch and technique of the player is also right out of the top draw.
A fierce shot and sweeping cross-field passing ability are other parts of his armoury, and if he can reach the top of his game in Germany England would have a great chance of going all the way.
It will be Gerrard's first World Cup after missing out in 2002 through injury, while Euro 2004 was his first real involvement in a major tournament after making just one substitute appearance for Kevin Keegan in Euro 2000.
Gerrard made his England debut against Ukraine just before Euro 2000, and his first goal for his country came in their never-to-be-forgotten 5-1 victory over old rivals Germany in a World Cup qualifier in Munich.
Gerrard was something of a talisman early in his England career, as his country were unbeaten in his first 21 matches in a Three Lions shirt.
After being made captain of Liverpool by Gerrard Houllier in 2003, Gerrard also grabbed the skipper's armband for England in a friendly in Sweden in March 2004.
Now a living legend in Liverpool, the only chink in Gerrard's armour has been an occasional sending off, with his soft dismissal in the latest Merseyside derby worrying some, although it might just be the small reminder he needed to keep his head.
Should he manage to be able to hit top gear in Germany after such a long season, he is capable of changing any game and frighten any defence he comes up against.
If England do manage to go all the way, it would cap an amazing 12-months for the Liverpool academy graduate, who was voted as the PFA Player of the Year by his fellow professionals in April.
