BOSS: WE CAN WIN WITHOUT STEVIE
Mark Platt 01 April 2006
Rafael Benitez insists Liverpool are not a one-man team and is confident his players are more than capable of coping without influential skipper Steven Gerrard at West Brom later today.
Gerrard is suspended for the trip to The Hawthorns following his sending off against Everton last week but Benitez is not overly concerned and pointed to the impressive derby performance seven days ago as an example why.
"We know Steven is an important player for us and he is our top goalscorer," says the Reds boss. "But we have shown we can win games without him, like last weekend's derby versus Everton, and I am sure we can manage the situation again this weekend.
"The team has confidence to play without him. We are scoring goals from the strikers and midfielders and they are working really hard as a team.
"For me as a manager, if they are playing well and working really hard it will be enough."
