Alonso winning fitness battle
Sunday 27th March 2005
Liverpool’s prospects of progressing in the Champions League have been enhanced by the news that Xabi Alonso is set to return to full training and he looks likely to play some part of the quarter final tie against Juventus. The news will be a major morale boost to the injury hit Reds, ahead of what is sure to be an emotional double header against the Turin giants.
Alonso was the most impressive of coach Rafa Benitez’ imports until an injury on New Year’s Day sidelined him. A robust Frank Lampard tackle during the 1-0 defeat by Chelsea ruled the ex Real Sociedad midfielder out for at least three months with an ankle fracture.
It had been feared that Alonso would not feature again this season but his recovery under the Liverpool medical team has been excellent. Benitez revealed, “Now, it looks better for him. He may be able to play for the last month. He's working with our physiotherapists and making progress. He will be like a new, very important player for us. ”
On the timing of Alonso's return, Benitez said, “Maybe Xabi will be available for the second game of the quarter-final. He is improving a lot. If he's back training with the rest of the squad by the end of the month, like we hope, he has a good chance.
The Spanish coach continued, "It will be good for the team spirit to have him back. Not only will it give the side a lift, it will also make those who are playing work even harder to stay in the team."
If there is no reaction to full training Alonso is expected to turn out against Leeds United for the Liverpool reserve team on April 6. If that is successful the player will be certain to feature in the Stadio del Alpe the following week.
