INSIDE THE MIND OF RAFAEL BENITEZ
Paul Rogers 29 October 2005

Rafa on... raised expectations
"If you win the Champions League then people expect the Premier League the next season but it is not so easy. I am not afraid if people want more; I will try to give them more. I am not the kind of person to see a problem as impossible to solve. I am more anxious than ever to win every game, starting with West Ham."

Rafa on... a real crisis
"There was a crisis in 1929 [the Stock Market crash which led to the Great Depression]; maybe for some people we are suffering one now but I don't think so. In football everything can change in one week. I remember how amazing it was to see all the Liverpool fans out on the streets after we won the Champions' League and I want to bring them back out again."

Rafa on... squad rotation
"If you play one game every week it's easy (to play the same team), but if you're playing two or three games in eight days or two games in one week, it's more difficult. I don't feel a need to repeat the team. I think about picking the best players for each game. When you change the team and win, people say, 'Fantastic, the squad is good'. If you lose, people say, 'Maybe he needs to think about changing the team.'"

Rafa on... gaining strength from being sacked
"If you were afraid as a manager every week, you couldn't manage a team. I have a lot of experience in bad situations. I have been sacked and relegated with different teams, but you know you need to be calm, try your best and work with your team. I learnt a lot (from being sacked). In Spain, they say if you have not been sacked you are not a good manager. I've experienced it and I don't want to experience it again."

Rafa on... rumours he's about to return to Spain
"I read in some newspapers that I'm maybe thinking about it (leaving), but now I have more determination for winning games and improving the domestic (situation). I'm not the kind of person who will say I can't do this, it's impossible. I will try and correct it, but to reduce the gap (in the Premiership) won't take three days, it will take time."

Rafa on... transfers
"We've made two mistakes by not signing a right midfielder and a centre-back. We have a better squad than last year, but recent results show we don't have the balance. We are preparing now for the transfer window. We tried hard to sign players for the right side and centre-backs, but when you try for one month for one player and then he says no, as in the case of Luis Figo, you have less time to go for the next name on your list. We had a lot of names in the summer, but they all proved difficult. I'm confident it will be different in January."

Rafa on... his role at LFC
"The club is a train and I am sat in the engine. If we go forward quickly, then the rest of the train can follow. I need to work on the engine and improve it so it so that it runs faster. After I know the engine is running in the right way, I can start to have a look at things travelling beind it. My priority is to improve the first team. I am sure the fans will give us more time. I remember when we won the Champions League and it was amazing when we came back to Liverpool and I want to see that again."

Rafa on... today's match
"We need to create more chances. I want to see goals on Saturday, then people can start talking about other things. The attitude in training has been fantastic and they have been working hard this week. What I have seen on the training ground gives me confidence for this game."

Rafa on... perseverance
"If you are a player and you don't shoot the next time after missing, then you won't score. If you put the ball in the stands and people whistle at you, if you don't try again you cannot score. If you pass badly, if you want to improve you must want to receive the ball and try again. If you cannot do those things then you are not a player for a top team."

Rafa on... patience
"I have confidence in myself, in my team and in my staff. I have been training teams for 18 years and I know there is always another day. Each week things can change. Look at the En gland manager. I remember hearing so much after England had lost to Denmark, everyone was against the manager but they have qualified for the World Cup. Things can change quickly. I was told last season that it was the worst Liverpool team in 40 years yet we won the Champions League. I am now being told after two months of the season that we are no good, I say we must wait until the end of the season before making judgements."

Benitez insists there is no crisis at Liverpool

LIVERPOOL, England, Oct 28 (Reuters) - Coach Rafael Benitez has dismissed talk of a crisis at European champions Liverpool and says his detractors should wait until the end of the season before passing judgement.

Liverpool languish in 13th place in the Premier League, 18 points behind champions Chelsea, and were sent packing from the League Cup in midweek by second division Crystal Palace.

'A lot of people talked about Liverpool last season and said we were the worst Liverpool team for 40 years,' Benitez told reporters on Friday.

'Then we won the Champions League and now the Super Cup and that proves you can not talk about a team after two and a half months of the season.

'You must wait until the end, and at the end of the season you can say it was a good or a bad season.'

Despite scoring just five goals in eight league games, the Spaniard believes his team are better than last season.

'We are more consistent. We are drawing against good teams, okay we would like to win, but to me it means we are better than last season.

'The problem with the league table is that we have two games in hand (on Chelsea). Think about if we win those two games - we will be in the top four,' he added.

Benitez believes beating West Ham at Anfield on Saturday will bring a change in people's attitude towards the European champions.

'I am a person that analyses a lot of things,' he said. Each week can change in football. We talk about the England national team. I remember when they were beaten last month and everyone was against the manager and said the team was terrible.

'One game later the team qualified for the World Cup and everyone now says England can win the World Cup.'
