Liverpool: Has Benitez got the measure of Mourinho?

Before Chelsea met Liverpool in the Champions’ League semi-final last season, the Blues had won all three contests between the two sides since Jose Mourinho had taken over at Stamford Bridge. Since then, Chelsea haven’t beaten Liverpool in three games, and more importantly haven’t looked like beating them.

This weekend they meet again for the second time in under a week, and this will surely show us whether or not Rafa Benitez is coming out on top in his battles with Mourinho. At present, things are looking fare more favourable towards the Spaniard.

Even in Chelsea’s three domestic wins over Liverpool last season, there was an element of luck involved. In the first league meeting, Joe Cole scored the only goal in a game that really could have gone either way. But in fairness to Chelsea, that is the hallmark of champions. But in the return fixture, Liverpool felt anything but fairness as once again Cole struck the only goal. His strike however, wasn’t before a clear handball by Tiago was waved away by referee Mike Riley, despite him putting the whistle to his mouth as if to blow for the offence.

These games were perhaps trivial in the end, as Liverpool offered no threat to Chelsea in the Premiership. But when Chelsea won a third successive contest it really hurt Liverpool, particularly as they hadn’t been outplayed in any of the matches. It took an unfortunate Steven Gerrard own goal to turn the tie in Chelsea’s favour. But when the two sides were paired together in the Champions’ League semis, Benitez used these contests as inspiration, knowing that on every occasion the only difference between the sides was that bit of luck that always favours the champions.

The most important thing for Liverpool was that they could have won all three games, and were unlucky not to do so. But it was in these European contests when Benitez really outdid his opposite number. Despite Liverpool setting out their stall not to lose at Stamford Bridge, they came closest to winning the tie, with only a spectacular save from Petr Cech denying Milan Baros a headed goal. But Benitez had sent his men out not to lose and that is what they did. Mourinho on the other hand, did not have an answer to Liverpool’s resistance.

To this day Mourinho claims Liverpool had the rub of the green in the second leg, still insisting Luis Garcia’s winner didn’t cross the line, ignoring the fact that had it not been given it would have been a clear-cut penalty and a certain red card for Cech. But for the second consecutive game, Benitez did exactly what he had hoped, this time getting an early goal, then frustrating Chelsea. And for the second time running, Mourinho didn’t have a tactical answer. If teams don’t over-attack Chelsea, they can’t sit back and catch them on the break.

But Mourinho’s inability to tactically change a game has happened more than once. On so many occasions when up against it, he brings on millions of pounds worth of talent, and against most teams that is enough to clinch the game. But not against a solid defence. When it comes to a tactical ability to change a game, Benitez has continually outshone Mourinho. The Spaniard’s game-changing decision to bring on Didi Hamann in the Champions’ League Final is an example of this.

Yet in the Champions’ League group game on Tuesday night, with things not going his way, Mourinho brought on over £40million worth of talent to try and change things. This was to no avail as substitutes Hernan Crespo and Shaun Wright-Phillips barely got a kick. There is no denying that Mourinho is both one of the best coaches and one of the best motivators in the world. But when it comes to in game changes, he tends to throw on expensive players, rather than changing the shape of his team and the game.

And he can be considered extremely luck to have come away with a point, as William Gallas clearly handled Jamie Carragher’s header in the area right in front of the eyes of Spanish referee Massimo De Santis. Why this wasn’t given, only De Santis knows. They were also lucky to escape an early rash challenge from Didier Drogba on Sami Hyypia, which could also have resulted in a spot kick. While the game was tight and a draw was arguably a fair result, if anyone was going to win, it was going to be Liverpool, who dominated the second half with Steven Gerrard dominating England team mate Frank Lampard, and Xabi Alonso outshining £24-million-man Michael Essien.

But this weekend its back to domestics as Chelsea visit Anfield in the Premiership bearing confidence from three successive domestic victories over Liverpool. And with Mourinho’s men winning seven from seven in the league, few teams will be confident against them.

However, in six contests which Liverpool could easily have won each one, the sides have proved to be extremely evenly matched. With one win and two draws, few people can doubt that Liverpool have had the better of these matches, despite them being European games. He would never admit it, but surely Mourinho must be worried by how Liverpool – a team without the stars of Chelsea and Man United – are looking on a par with them over 90 minutes. They may not have the consistency that Chelsea have over the course of the season, but when those players come out onto the Anfield pitch, Chelsea may well realise they have met their match.

The players and financial status of the two clubs might not compare, but the managers certainly do and Benitez now has the opportunity to prove that he has mastered the tactical outfoxing of Chelsea.
