Blues manager Steve Bruce was today set to clinch the signing of Salif Diao from Liverpool on loan for the rest of the season.

And Bruce has also targeted Portsmouth?s Amdy Faye, another Senegal international, for a £1.5million move to bolster his ranks.

The raid on Anfield has come out of the blue - Villa were linked with Diao last week - while Bruce has been toying with making a move for Faye for some time.

Bruce said: “We?ve got injuries to David Dunn, Muzzy Izzet and Stan Lazaridis. Jesper Gronkjaer has gone and then there?s Savage.

“Anyone can see where we need to strengthen. You need to make sure you?re not going to be short once the window has shut.-
