Benitez aimerait que Stevie marque beaucoup de buts cette saison, et que tous nos milieux axiaux attaquent d'avantage.

Gerrard should score more - Rafa

Steven Gerrard will lead Liverpool into Champions League action again this week after being told by boss Rafael Benitez that he is expected to score more goals this season.

The Liverpool skipper has already found his scoring touch, hitting five goals this summer although they were against Welsh village side TNS in the recent Champions League qualifying matches.

But Gerrard can hold his head high and rightly claim that he is currently England's top scorer - his competitors still a month away from being able to mount a challenge in competitive action.

The situation is not lost on Gerrard or Liverpool, but as the European champions prepare for their second qualifying round first leg against Kaunas in Lithuania, Benitez's words have a far more serious ring about them.

Benitez has a more adventurous role planned for Gerrard this season, now the weeks of worry and concern about his ambitions away from Anfield have been ended with a new £100,000-a-week contract.

Gerrard almost single-handedly steered the Reds past TNS in the last round, and Benitez will demand more goals against the confident Lithuanian champions.

Benitez said: "Five goals in two games is good for me. But I also want him to score more goals than last season, I want him to go forward with players around him like Xabi Alonso, Dietmar Hamann or Mohamed Sissoko to protect him and allow him to attack more.

"Gerrard can score a lot of goals this season and go forward and score more than he did last season."

Gerrard was joint top scorer with 13 last term alongside Luis Garcia and Milan Baros, and the goal he scored and penalty he won in Istanbul two months ago galvanised Liverpool during that memorable Champions League final win over AC Milan.

Liverpool are now having regain their place in the competition the hard way, trawling their way through Europe's minnows to claim what will be a number one seeding if they do reach the lucrative group stages.

A few more Gerrard goals on the way will certain help smooth the passage back amongst the big boys, and emphasise Benitez's team strategy for the next Premiership campaign.

His side have banged in 17 goals in five pre-season games already this summer - Saturday's 4-3 friendly victory over Olympiakos being just the latest of what seems to be a far more adventurous game plan than last term.

They have faced varying standards of opponents at various stages of fitness, but the goals have flooded in and Benitez will want more against Kaunas, to make Friday's third qualifying draw in Nyon, Switzerland a key moment in Liverpool's pre-season.

Benitez, who will give new £7m striker Peter Crouch his competitive match debut in Lithuania, said: "I want more goals from Stevie this season and from everywhere else.

"Crouch has been a good signing for us. When you have only one or two players for one position, you do not have a decision. But four or five options produces more competition.

"Crouch is tall, good in the air, but he can always keep the ball well on the ground. You need a target man to keep possession of the ball, more options.

"I prefer a bigger squad and that will produce a better team than last season.

"We now have (Anthony) Le Tallec, Luis Garcia, (Milan) Baros, (Djibril) Cisse, (Fernando) Morientes and Crouch. That is more options and you can select who you want, they will have to work hard if they want to play and that is good for me.

"Cisse also gives us another option with his pace, with Crouch and Morientes there is something different also. If you have more competition it is good for us."
