PostSubject: Joe Cole signs for LFC   Joe Cole signs for LFC EmptyMon 19 Jul 2010 - 22:58

Joe Cole has signed a four year contract to join LFC subject to a medical tomorrow.

As the first signing under Roy Hodgson this augurs well for the future and gives the club the fans and the players the right message as to where the club is headed from here.

The fact that Cole decided to sign for us rather than Spurs who has offered a higher salary tells me how we can expect the team to develop over the coming season.
I expect Cole to be a regular starter under Hodgson who is no fan of the rotation system so we can expect to see Cole flourish from the confidence he will get (and the other players who maintain form) from a regular run in the side. I have never believed in the rotation system when it meant pulling a player who is performing well out of the side. Happily neither does Roy.

Contrast the difference in the approach of Roy to Benitez. Roy has signed a proven tried and tested Premiership player on a free transfer. A player the Anfield crowd will adore a player who likes to show his skills for a reported £90,000 salary.

Benitez brought us Voronin who had never played in the Prem for £70,000 Salary. Make your own mind up.

I also admire the way this signing was handled, very low key. Yes inevitably we were linked with the player but this was much more in keeping with the way we used to do business and hopefully will continue to.

I can only imagine the likes of Stevie and Nando will be encouraged by this signing.

Ten things you need to know about new Liverpool FC signing Joe Cole (GALLERY)
Jul 19 2010 Dan Kay
Joe was a child prodigy who received national media attention as a schoolboy, famously scoring 7 of the 8 goals the England youth team scored against Spain in one match.

* Manchester United reportedly offered to pay £10 million for his services as a 16-year-old.

* In 1999 Cole was part of West Ham's victorious FA Youth Cup winning squad (alongside Michael Carrick), defeating Coventry City 9–0 on aggregate in the final

* Cole's first appearance for West Ham against the Reds at Anfield was in February 1999 when he played in a 2-2 draw before being substituted after 80 minutes by Gavin Holligan

* Became West Ham captain at the age of 21 at the beginning of 2003 but left the club to join Chelsea in May that year after the Hammers were relegated despite gaining 42 points, the highest total a team has gone down with in the Premier League era

* In 2004/05, Cole scored the only goal in both Premier League meetings with Liverpool - he couldn't stop the Reds knocking Chelsea out of the European Cup at the semi-final stage however.

* Cole was also the match-winner in the 2007 Champions League semi-final first leg between Chelsea and Liverpool - again it was the Reds who reached the Final.

* In his seven years at Chelsea, Cole won three league titles and two FA Cups

* Cole has represented England 56 times at senior level, scoring 10 goals in the process.

* Cole married model and former 'I'm A Celebrity' contestant Carly Zucker on 20 June 2009 - they had their first child, Ruby, in March 2010

Signing Joe Cole lifts Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson into the big league By Colin Young Last updated at 10:01 PM on 19th July 2010

It is a signing which not only puts Liverpool firmly back on the Premier League map but establishes Roy Hodgson as a manager with serious intent and pulling power at Anfield.

On the move: Cole chose Liverpool over Spurs and Arsenal
Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres take note. Free agent Joe Cole's decision to turn his back on Arsenal and Tottenham is about more than money.
Those two London clubs, both Champions League qualifiers, are working within the same wage budget as the Merseyside club, who will become the first English team to kick off their season when they start their Europa Cup campaign against minnows from Macedonia or Armenia next week.
Having agreed an £80,000-a-week deal, with lucrative top-up bonuses, Cole's mind was made up by the fact that he was virtually guaranteed regular first-team football at Anfield.
As if to emphasise the point, the 28-year-old Londoner has been handed Liverpool's coveted No 7 shirt, which has the same aura as the No 10 of Brazil or No 9 at St James's Park.

Worn with distinction by title and European Cup winners Kevin Keegan and Kenny Dalglish in the 70s and 80s, it has been known to make or break lesser mortals since.
For every Steve McManaman, Nigel Clough or Peter Beardsley, there is a Robbie Keane, Harry Kewell or Vladimir Smicer.

As a football fan who knows his history, Cole will be well aware of the significance of Hodgson's act, even though he was nine when Liverpool last won the league title.
Former striker Ian Rush, the man who partnered Dalglish, believes Cole's signing sends out a positive message to Liverpool supporters, just when they needed it most and is also proof that Hodgson has quickly started to erase the memory of Rafael Benitez.
He can now be taken seriously as a Liverpool manager who will entice internationals to his club as well as persuade the existing ones to stay.
Joe cole by numbers
Rush said: 'Roy Hodgson knows what he wants, and he can talk these players into signing. To get Joe to come out of London is a coup for Hodgson. A lot of people were expecting him to stay in London.
'This is the signing supporters wanted and it's a big boost for them. You look at last season when we went into it not hoping but thinking we were going to win the league. 'This season people are thinking, "Are we going to finish in the top four?" I think this sends a sign out to Liverpool supporters that the club do mean business.
'Joe could play just behind Torres. People don't know his position because he can play on the left, right and just off the striker, and I think it's a wonderful signing. Skill wise, he is the best in England, and maybe getting regular football is a reason why he has come to Liverpool.'
He has joined the five-time European champions after Yossi Benayoun headed in the opposite direction to Stamford Bridge.
The Israel midfielder was also regarded with affectionate by Liverpool fans, but former assistant boss Phil Thompson believes the club have the better end of the deal. And, after clinching the £1.7million signing of Charlton's Jonjo Shelvey before Benitez's departure, Liverpool's addition of Cole continues a much-needed policy of acquiring English talent, says Thompson.
He said: 'I would have liked Benayoun to have stayed. He was a really good player and I'm shocked he went for £5million. But I'd have Cole every time of the day.
'It's something I've been stressing with Roy Hodgson that we should start heading back to signing British players. Cole is the one who can ignite it and can show the right players will come to Anfield despite not having Champions League football.
'The arrival of Joe Cole will show all is not lost and Liverpool are still a good football club.'
Now Cole has to show he is the player everyone thought he could be.

Jamie Redknapp: Joe Cole was right to choose Liverpool over Tottenham and Arsenal
By Jamie Redknapp
Last updated at 10:01 PM on 19th July 2010

Joe Cole has made the right decision. Going to Anfield to play for Liverpool is the right move.
I know my dad, Harry, tried to take him to Tottenham and I can see why. He's a clever footballer, who unlocks defences and who still has so much to offer, an old fashioned dribbler.

Cole will be revitalised by his move to Anfield, where he will link up with Gerrard instead of battling with him
Tottenham have those players. Luka Modric, Niko Kranjcar ... would Joe have got into the team? I doubt it.
Of course, in what they hope will be a Champions League season, they need strength in depth but he needs to be playing first team football now.
At 28, Joe cannot continue to be an impact substitute. He's better than that. He needs a manager to love him. He didn't have it with Chelsea, he hasn't had it with England.
When he played for my dad at West Ham, he performed better with an arm around the shoulder. He will get that from Roy Hodgson.
Signing Cole is a coup for the new Liverpool manager. With there being doubts cast about the future of Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard and questions about their lack of spending power, this is a message of intent.
For the club, it's a no brainer. They have signed a £15million player for free. I know Joe's wages have caused much debate, but he wasn't asking for astronomical amounts, he wasn't being greedy.
Players hold so much power and sway now and he had found himself in an enviable position. His club, Chelsea, didn't want him, that was clear. They didn't go out of their way to keep him - can you see them letting a player like Michael Essien get into the same position?

So he has just been looking for the right deal. Remember, Joe scored that brilliant goal for Chelsea at Old Trafford last season which effectively won them the title. Even then, they still didn't love him enough.

So Joe knew he wasn't wanted and has spent the time since the World Cup considering his options.
Arsenal were also interested and you can see that he is Arsene Wenger's kind of player; very comfortable with the ball.
Where will he play for Liverpool? He can play off the front, behind a striker, or he can play left or right. I don't suppose you will see him in a central midfield position in a 4-4-2, but he is no luxury player.
I've played against Joe and he will get about the pitch and close you down, he's not afraid of the dirty work, or of putting his foot in.
I know Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher will be pleased he is coming. I hope it is not as a replacement for Gerrard, because that would be a big step backwards.
Liverpool need to soak Cole with the ball and he will create chances and score goals. Their crowd appreciates a good footballer and will welcome him to Anfield.
There has been much talk that he wanted to stay in London, but I made the transition as a young boy and so he can as a player at the peak of his powers.
This is no gamble by Liverpool. And for the player, it is the ideal chance for him to get his career going again. It might even convince Fabio Capello that he can be an international player to trust.
