Benayoun Empty
PostSubject: Benayoun   Benayoun EmptyTue 15 Jun 2010 - 12:36

I seem to recall saying he would be sold in the January window and was roundly criticised for intimating we might be selling one of our best players.

It was only a matter of time.

I think Chelsea will play him in his best position, on the right of Midffield. Something Benitez rarely did. I will be sorry to see him go.

Article from the Telegraph today;

The 30-year-old Israeli has been earmarked as Joe Cole’s replacement after Chelsea confirmed last week that the England international was going to be released at the end of this month after failing to agree a new contract.

Although Chelsea, who have also released Michael Ballack and Juliano Belletti, are looking to acquire younger players this summer, and blood five from their youth set-up next season, the deal to sign Benayoun is regarded as a good one.

Sport on television Benayoun is set to agree terms on a four-year contract and although Liverpool are still hoping to hold out for more than the £6 million Chelsea are offering, it is believed a deal is close to being agreed.

He joined Liverpool for £5 million in 2007, from West Ham United, and has been a moderate success although, under Rafael Benítez, opportunities were often limited. One complication is that Liverpool are being asked to conduct negotiations despite not yet having a replacement for Benítez.

Chelsea are set to make an exception to their policy of targeting players in their early twenties because Benayoun is a proven Premier League performer and his wage demands are far lower than those of Cole.

It is possible that Chelsea will return to Liverpool this summer with a bid for striker Fernando Torres, although it is unlikely his future will be decided before a new manager is appointed.

The signing of Benayoun will be the first made by manager Carlo Ancelotti since he took over last summer at Stamford Bridge and is set to be followed by at least two other experienced players while Chelsea will also continue to trim their squad with one or two other high-profile departures.

Meanwhile, former Chelsea striker Adrian Mutu has lost his final appeal in a five-year legal battle and must pay the club £14 million in damages for breach of contract. The Swiss Federal Court on Monday confirmed that it had upheld the decision made by Fifa and the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Mutu was sacked by Chelsea in 2004 after testing positive for cocaine. He received a seven-month worldwide ban. The club sued him to recover the transfer fee they paid Parma. CAS upheld Fifa’s ruling for a breach of contract which Mutu described as “inhumane and unjust” but, now, the Swiss courts have also agreed and he must pay up

Yossi Benayoun has taken a significant step towards leaving Liverpool for Chelsea by agreeing in principle a four-year contract with the Barclays Premier League champions.

Although a fee has yet to be agreed between the clubs, such is Benayoun’s determination to quit Anfield that Liverpool officials have been braced for his departure for some time.

Benayoun, 30, is known to have fallen out with Rafael Benítez and it was widely assumed that the Israel midfield player would stay if the manager left. But even the removal of Benítez from the equation has not been enough to convince him to remain.

Chelsea are keen to recruit Benayoun to fill the void that will be created when Joe Cole leaves Stamford Bridge on a free transfer this summer and have made Liverpool an offer in the region of £4 million.

That bid has been rejected by Liverpool, who feel Benayoun is worth at least twice that amount. But the club are increasingly resigned to his departure and a compromise fee of about £5.5 million is likely to be agreed.

Benayoun has completed only 12 months of a four-year contract worth £55,000 a week and only last month claimed that “if it depended on me, I would stay here and retire in Liverpool. The fans are the best in the world, but it depends on a lot of things.”

However, the lure of playing in next season’s Champions League, for which Liverpool failed to qualify, and a substantial pay rise have contributed to Benayoun’s desire to leave the club he joined from West Ham United in July 2007.

Should Benayoun complete his move to West London, he could be the first of a number of players to leave Liverpool in what is likely to be a summer of upheaval in the wake of Benítez’s exit.

Javier Mascherano is keen to follow the Spaniard to Inter Milan and is learning Italian while on World Cup duty with Argentina. Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres have refused to discuss their futures until after the tournament and are waiting to see if Liverpool can match their ambitions before deciding whether to stay or go.

A number of other players are up for sale, with Liverpool open to offers for Ryan Babel, Albert Riera and Philipp Degen, among others, while Diego Cavalieri, the club’s second-choice goalkeeper, is seeking a transfer to secure regular first-team football, having been understudy to Pepe Reina for two years.

It is against this backdrop that Liverpool continue their search for a new manager. Club officials are adamant that they will not be rushed into a replacement for Benítez despite speculation suggesting that Roy Hodgson, the Fulham manager who is widely believed to be their No 1 target, was hoping to be offered the job before travelling to South Africa this week.

Hodgson will be aware that popular support for Kenny Dalglish, his long-time friend, to become Benítez’s successor is growing on Merseyside, with the Liverpool legend having made it clear that he would like to be considered for the position.

While Hodgson has not made a decision to leave Fulham, it is understood that he would like to hear what Liverpool have to say.

Liverpool, though, are comfortable with the way that their recruitment process is going, the desire to ensure that they attract the best possible manager available overriding any yearning to make a hasty appointment that they could come to regret.

That leaves Hodgson, who is working as a BBC pundit at the World Cup, in limbo to a degree, unsure whether he will be the subject of the formal approach that had seemed to be inevitable only a week ago

Sadly what Yossi has to say is what many of us knew to be the case with Benitez. I am sorry to see you go Benni as for me you were always one of our better players who gave his all each and every time; Shame you couldn't have waited a little longer but with the time it took to appoint Benitez replacement and with Chelsea knocking on your door I can understand your reasons. Sadly some of the players Benitez used to replace you, are still with us an no one is breaking the door down to sign them. Good luck for the future Yossi.

Benayoun: Blaming Benitez

..Yossi Benayoun has launched a scathing attack on Rafa Benitez accusing him of forcing him out of Liverpool.

The Israeli international left Liverpool for Chelsea earlier this month and he claims the treatment he received from former Reds boss Rafa Benitez was the reason for his departure.

The 30-year-old has accused Benitez of trying to break his spirit and treating him with a lack of respect during his time on Merseyside.

Respect
"I made up my mind to leave a long time ago because of Benitez. He never treated me with the respect I deserved. If I played well, I never felt he gave me credit," Benayoun told the News of The World.

"When I scored, I still expected to be out of the team the next game.

"And when the fans wanted me to play, Benitez told me he couldn't understand why.

"There are many examples of him treating me badly.

"Last season, against Fulham and Lyon, the fans booed when I was subbed. They thought I was playing well but Benitez told me he was surprised they booed because I was not good enough.

Confidence
"It was as if the fans' reaction worked against me. The situation got worse afterwards.

"He tried to destroy my confidence. You can't treat a player like this and expect him to be happy.

"I felt so unhappy but, out of respect to the club, I never spoke out. The players and the people at the top of the club knew how I felt."
