King Kenny steps down as Kingmaker.

Kenny Dalglish has requested to be excused from the panel that would choose the next Manager of Liverpool.

You can only read this as himself wishing to apply for the job.

Given the present climate and paucity of better canditates, bring on King Kenny.

I believe if he is allowed to choose his own management team, and I see no reason why not. This is the most intelligent choice available.

I would also like to see Phil Thompson brought back as his assistant, this would make a formidable management team of 2 former players
who are both passionate and have the understadning of what LFC is really about.

Please, please, please be true.

Bring back Steve Heighway anyone? Carragher to be groomed for the future?

King Kenny steps down as Kingmaker Empty
PostSubject: Looks as though it will be Hodgson   King Kenny steps down as Kingmaker EmptyMon 14 Jun 2010 - 11:17

If this report is true then it would appear that Hodson will be installed very shortly as our new manager.

Roy Hodgson is ready to open talks about becoming the next Liverpool manager this week - and Fulham chiefs fear he is on his way to Anfield.

Liverpool managing director Christian Purslow has received a glowing recommendation about Hodgson from former Anfield boss Gerard Houllier. And Fulham have now put transfer and contract talks on hold until his future is sorted, as they believe their hugely successful boss is on his way to Merseyside.

Kop legend Kenny Dalglish has now withdrawn his interest in taking over as manager. And Liverpool are poised to make an official approach, opening the door for talks to start in the next few days. Agents working on deals to bring players to Fulham, and those hoping to renegotiate existing contracts, have been told they must wait until Hodgson has spoken to Liverpool.

Fulham chairman Mohamed Al Fayed will not make it easy for Hodgson to leave, offering him a major pay rise and transfer budget.

But Liverpool are ready to move after Purslow staged a series of consultations. Former Anfield chief Houllier, who managed the club between 1998-2004, is one of several high-profile football figures to have been consulted by Purslow in the pursuit of a new boss to succeed Rafa Benitez.

Purslow has spoken to several senior UEFA figures, including Houllier and ex-Scotland boss Andy Roxburgh, about Hodgson's credentials. And both Houllier and Roxburgh recommended Hodgson as the ideal candidate to succeed Benitez.

The clear sign Hodgson will be formally offered the chance to manage Liverpool in the coming days follows a decision by Dalglish to step away from pursuing the job.

The Scot's change of heart about resurrecting his managerial career back at Anfield has cleared the way for Hodgson to take over from Benitez, who has joined Inter Milan.

Houllier, who won a UEFA Cup, Super Cup, FA Cup and two League Cups during his Anfield reign, was quick to give him his seal of approval with the Fulham chief highly regarded amongst UEFA's elite group of coaches and their technical committee.

The Fulham boss, 62, is seen as a safe pair of hands and an experienced man who can restore the stability and dignity the club have lost, particularly in the last two years.

Liverpool are in no great rush to make the appointment as their pre-season plans have been put in place by No.2 Sammy Lee, who is staying despite Benitez's exit.

Their non-World Cup stars are due back for training around July 5 in readiness for their Europa League qualifier at the end of next month.

King Kenny steps down as Kingmaker Empty
PostSubject: Will he won't he?   King Kenny steps down as Kingmaker EmptyWed 16 Jun 2010 - 11:35

Hard to know what is going on as some reports say he has stood down as a candidate while others say he still want's the job?
Rafa Benitez didn't exactly help by giving Dalglish his public backing, the nomination from the guy who was sacked is hardly the best one to have.
Interestingly Benitez was quoted as saying he had a good relationship with the players and a fantastic one with the fans. I personallly would have preferred it if he had a fantstic relationship with the players and a good one with the fans. The difference is more than subtle in my opinion.

Article below from todays Telegraph:

Dalglish, the last manager to win the title with Liverpool, in 1990, who returned to Merseyside last year to work as an ambassador for the club’s academy, was named in an official communique as the man leading the search for Benitez’s replacement when the Spaniard left Anfield by mutual consent this month.

Liverpool identified Roy Hodgson, the Fulham manager, as their ideal candidate because of his experience in the Premier League and in Europe, as well as the perception that his understated manner might herald an end to years of internecine politicking under Benitez.

Dalglish drawn by love for Liverpool But no formal offer has been forthcoming and, judging by comments made by Paul, Dalglish is far from impressed by Hodgson’s claims to become his latest heir and believes the most viable option for the club is to appoint him as manager at least until the search, led by chairman Martin Broughton and Barclays Capital, for new owners bears fruit.

“I do not think he is the best person for the job, but he is the best person of everybody available,” said Paul, now manager of the MLS side Tampa Bay Rowdies, of his father.

“It is not as though Jose Mourinho is going to come and do the job. It is not as though Fabio Capello is going to leave England to be the next manager of Liverpool.

“My dad wants to do the job and he feels he is the best person available to do the job. If Jose Mourinho was available and wanted it, my dad would not have any interest in the job, because all he ever does is act in the best interest of Liverpool.

“If new owners come in to invest money in the team and they can attract a Mourinho or a Capello, he would happily step aside if it was in the best interest of the club. My dad wants to do the job because he feels it is the best thing for Liverpool at this time. If that were to change, he would happily step aside.”

Benitez himself, meanwhile, revealed that “95 per cent” of his former players at Anfield, including captain Steven Gerrard, had been in touch to wish him luck after he was unveiled as Inter Milan’s new manager.

“Of course it was difficult to leave Liverpool,” said the Spaniard, who has signed a two-year contract at the San Siro. “I had been there for many years. But this was a perfect opportunity. I spoke with many of my players and they wished me luck.”

Benitez will return to Anfield in the coming weeks to secure the £30 million signature of Javier Mascherano, the Argentine international captain who confessed this week he is learning Italian, after Massimo Moratti, the Inter president, promised him the defensive midfielder as his first purchase.

The former Liverpool manager faces an almost impossible task to improve upon the work of his predecessor, Jose Mourinho, even if he manages to stave off the Portuguese’s determination to sign two of his key players from last season’s treble-winning campaign, Diego Milito and Maicon. Benitez, though, is not one to aim low.

“Mourinho did a tremendous job here,” he said. “But I am different and I want to do my own work. After his great year we have the chance to win six trophies and we will try to do so

That would be all we need to make us a complete laughing stock a manager who was nominate man of the year by none other footballing authority than Durex.
Say no more.

Sven-Goran Eriksson is one of the names Liverpool will consider as Rafa Benitez successor, according to Soccernet sources.

Eriksson threw his hat into the ring by declaring his interest as soon as Benitez walked out of Anfield and joined Inter Milan And the former England coach, now in charge of Ivory Coast for the duration of the World Cup in South Africa, would be eager to return to English football as he has confessed that he was a closet Liverpool fan and would love the job on Merseyside.

That has drawn Liverpool's attention to Eriksson as a candidate, and one leading football agent told Soccernet on Tuesday: "My information is that his name has been mentioned now at board level at Liverpool.

"Roy Hodgson is the clear favourite, but in reality, although he has been portrayed as a readymade replacement for Benitez, Fulham finished in mid table, and I am not so sure about it."

Eriksson also has experience and he was very popular in his last job in the Premier League at Manchester City, where the fans campaigned for the Swede to stay before he was replaced by Mark Hughes.

Although it was a nightmare at Notts County, after he was sacked by Mexico, the controversial coach would make Liverpool his No.1 choice for a dramatic return, the question is whether Liverpool feel the same.

PostSubject: No thanks   King Kenny steps down as Kingmaker EmptyFri 18 Jun 2010 - 10:47

Apparently this article from todays Telegraph reports that Dalglish met Pellegrino at Heathrow Airport. Personnally I have met many people at airports as well, I even sat next to Houillier on flight back from Liverpool to Paris once. We neve did discuss me taking over as a manager as far as I can remember. I did give him a few pointers in the right direction though.

I take this report with a very large pinch of salt.

The Chilean, dismissed after just one season at the Bernabéu despite garnering 96 points in the league, was reported to have met Kenny Dalglish at Heathrow on Thursday.

Sources close to Pellegrini deny they have had any contact with the Anfield club, though it is thought his credentials for the position have been discussed by Liverpool’s board.

As Liverpool fans look forward to the new Premier League season and an opening-day clash at Anfield with Arsenal, they will be disappointed to hear the news from Javier Mascherano’s agent that the player is in talks with Inter Milan over a possible move to the San Siro, which would mean the Liverpool midfielder is reunited with Benítez.

Speculation has been rife that the Argentina captain Mascherano would move to Italy since Benítez was confirmed as Jose Mourinho’s replacement last week.

Mascherano, who was heavily linked with a move to Barcelona last summer, has spent the past three years at Anfield but contract negotiations have been put on hold and one of his agents, Marco Piccioli, claims the 25 year-old could follow in his former manager’s footsteps.

“There has already been a first contact with [Inter] director Marco Branca,” said Piccioli. “We are evaluating the move hard and in the next few days we will have a new meeting to better establish the details of this transfer deal.”

PostSubject: Re: King Kenny steps down as Kingmaker   King Kenny steps down as Kingmaker EmptyFri 18 Jun 2010 - 10:50

Roy Hodgson is still in pole position to succeed Rafael Benítez at Liverpool, despite Manuel Pellegrini emerging as a possible candidate for the vacant manager’s job at Anfield.

Pellegrini, recently replaced at Real Madrid by José Mourinho, was reported to have held talks with Kenny Dalglish at Heathrow yesterday and although sources close to the Chilean coach insisted that there has been no direct contact with Liverpool, it is understood that his suitability has been discussed by the Anfield hierarchy.

Liverpool are continuing to put a shortlist together and Dalglish, despite being deputised to aid the process, could still feature on it. However, Hodgson remains the prime target of the Liverpool board.

The Fulham manager insists that he remains in the dark about his future. “I don’t know,” he said when asked whether a move to Liverpool was in the pipeline. “I’m happy at Fulham. I can’t enlighten you.”

The continuing uncertainty at Liverpool has caused Pepe Reina to express sharp concern that the club face further regression next season if either Fernando Torres or Steven Gerrard is allowed to depart this summer, with the goalkeeper repeating his call for Tom Hicks and George Gillett Jr, the co-owners, to sell up at the earliest opportunity.

“It’s been two weeks since Rafa left and it’s one of those things,” Reina said. “Football is football and I always say the same thing — Liverpool will remain forever, which is the most important thing.

“But of course there is concern about Fernando and Stevie. Not just them, but others too. We are all in the same boat and we need to redecorate the boat — we want to be a lot stronger, more consistent and create and build a proper squad to be contenders for the title once again. Any team would count on the likes of Stevie and Fernando as big names. Without them, it will be really tough to be up there at the top. So fingers crossed. Once we sort the situation out with the manager and the owners, which we hope is soon, hopefully we can focus on building a squad.”

As well as coming under pressure from the club’s popular goalkeeper, Hicks and Gillett are the subject of parliamentary discussion after Steve Rotheram, the recently returned MP for Liverpool Walton, used his maiden House of Commons speech to accuse the American duo of “asset stripping” Liverpool, who are in his constituency.

“England’s most successful football club is slowly being drained by the greed of two American asset strippers and this is having a negative impact on regeneration projects for the whole area,” Rotheram, a former Lord Mayor of Liverpool, said.

“Unfortunately the beautiful game does not always attract those with beautiful intentions.”

King Kenny steps down as Kingmaker Empty
PostSubject: Dalglish to quit?   King Kenny steps down as Kingmaker EmptyWed 23 Jun 2010 - 11:22

Kenny Dalglish is understood to be ready to quit Liverpool if the Fulham manager Roy Hodgson succeeds Rafael Benitez.

The Anfield club have insisted that Dalglish's role in leading the search for the Spaniard's replacement with managing director Christian Purslow precludes him from being considered for his second stint in charge.

But the former striker clearly covets the managerial position and is so averse to the idea of Hodgson being appointed that he has informed the board that he cannot support their preferred candidate.

Dalglish believes he is best placed to lead Liverpool through a difficult period, when they lack the funds to match the bigger spending Premier League clubs and are seeking a new buyer.

The Scot returned to Anfield last year in a role which included responsibility for the club's academy and general ambassadorial duties.

His departure would be a personal blow to Purslow, having formed a close link with the managing director.

But Hodgson is the front runner to replace Benitez because the Liverpool hierarchy want some kind of normality restored after the friction-filled Benitez years.

There are some question marks among the Liverpool players about Hodgson's pedigree as the manager of a club of such stature, but the club value his European record.

However, Daniel Agger and Pepe Reina have declared their ongoing loyalty to the club despite Benitez's departure and Martin Skrtel believes the club can move forward now the uncertainty surroundings Benitez's future has been resolved after a poor season.

Hodgson could be appointed Liverpool manager within the next two weeks but there are also reports that Manuel Pellegrini, the former Real Madrid manager, is also being considered as a candidate.

Roy Hodgson flies back from the World Cup today, hoping to tie up a deal to become Liverpool's new boss.

The Fulham manager was favourite to succeed Fabio Capello if England had lost yesterday and the Italian was forced to quit.

Hodgson is Liverpool's No.1 target to replace Rafa Benitez and the Anfield board rubber-stamped an official move for him last Friday.

Talks have been held up by Hodgson's role as a BBC TV pundit in South Africa.

But with the experienced boss due back in London this evening, club officials expect to make an official announcement in the next 48 hours.

Liverpool have interviewed several candidates for the job, including Martin O'Neill, Manuel Pellegrini and Alex McLeish, with Reds legend Kenny Dalglish and MD Christian Purslow holding secret meetings over the past three weeks.

But they swiftly settled on Hodgson as the best candidate and have been waiting for him to return to thrash out contract details.

Yossi Benayoun's intended departure to Chelsea should be completed by the end of the week, with the £5million fee added to an initial transfer kitty of £15m.

And with £35m-rated Javier Mascherano agitating for a move, with both Barcelona and Inter Milan interested, Hodgson could have nearly £50m to spend.

King Kenny steps down as Kingmaker Empty
PostSubject: Re: King Kenny steps down as Kingmaker   King Kenny steps down as Kingmaker EmptyFri 25 Jun 2010 - 9:36

The gruff Glaswegian growl cut through the chatter in an incongruously upmarket London bar: “You’re either inside the tent p**sing out, or outside the tent p**sing in. Where are you?”

This was Kenny Dalglish responding to concerns that his return to Liverpool in an ambassadorial role last summer appeared to give a seal of approval to the owners. He made it clear that he was back at Anfield because he could help. He did, however, on that autumn day, endorse the role of Christian Purslow, the managing director, when questions were raised about the former equity dealer’s credentials.

Purslow is a friend, yet Dalglish will not stand idly by and watch him appoint Roy Hodgson as manager of Liverpool. Hodgson is another friend, but there are bigger matters at stake here for the Scot than personal relationships.

Dalglish does not believe the Fulham manager is the right man for the job. Purslow has the power to push the appointment through, but dare he? It is one thing to defeat Rafael Benítez after a dreadful season, quite another to take on the man who defers only to Bill Shankly as the club’s iconic figure.

Dalglish outside the tent is unthinkable. The man the Kop calls “The King” could bring torrents to bear that would wash Purslow’s entire campsite away.

King Kenny steps down as Kingmaker Empty
PostSubject: Re: King Kenny steps down as Kingmaker   King Kenny steps down as Kingmaker EmptyFri 25 Jun 2010 - 9:41

Kenny Dalglish will consider his future at Liverpool if they appoint Roy Hodgson as manager, with club officials having been made aware that their kingmaker is not supportive of the proposed coronation.

Hodgson, the odds-on favourite to succeed Rafael Benítez, is the favoured candidate of the Anfield hierarchy, despite not having won a trophy in English football. It has even been suggested that his expected move from Fulham could be completed by the end of this week.

But having informed the board of his opinion that he would be the right man for the job, Dalglish, 59, has made it abundantly clear that he feels he is a better candidate for the position than Hodgson, despite his longstanding friendship with the Fulham manager.

Should Liverpool not back Dalglish’s judgment after giving him the task of spearheading their search for a new manager then they will run the risk of making his position untenable, less than a year after he returned to the club in a dual role combining ambassadorial duties with a post at the Liverpool Academy in Kirkby.

Dalglish enjoys immense popular support among the Liverpool fanbase because of his legendary status at the club he served with great success as player and manager.

A Times online survey has indicated that he is the man most Liverpool supporters would like to see replace Benítez, with 57.5 per cent of those who took part in the poll backing Dalglish. Hodgson, by contrast, attracted only 6.5 per cent of the vote, in keeping with the prevailing feeling at the club that he may have succeeded in gaining support from the board, but winning over the supporters is likely to be a more arduous task.

The Fulham manager does have some support in the Anfield dressing room, but it is by no means unanimous. While some see him as a safe pair of hands during a turbulent time in the club’s history and admire the work he did in guiding Fulham to the Europa League final last season, others question his Premier League credentials. From being seen as the unity candidate, a man of dignity who is rarely caught up in controversy, Hodgson has suddenly become a cause of division at Anfield.

Should he accept the position of manager, he will do so in the knowledge that he faces not only a battle to turn around Liverpool’s fortunes, but he will also have to confront the equally significant challenge of proving his doubters wrong.

There is growing concern that his appointment could lack credibility given that it would be made by a Liverpool board led by a chairman, Martin Broughton, who has already revealed that he will leave the club within months should the long search for new owners bear fruit, and a managing director, Christian Purslow, who continues to operate without a long-term contract, having been recruited primarily to attract much-needed investment.

One of the main reasons why Dalglish was invited to head the search for a new manager, alongside Purslow, was to lend the process a credibility it might otherwise have lacked.

good writing, and very just,Dalglish should be offered the post, and if Mr Hodgson did take this very huge task on,then for how long ,As if a buyer was to find a home for there millions could he be certain to be kept on???.if Mr Dalglish was to be Manager, He himself would be also handing over to someone he could only have extreme confidence in. could he take Mr Heighway back,(success),Could Mr Carragher take his badges with the club he clearly loves, and Liverpools position in this situ is immpossible so at least the fans could have a small amount of pride and stamina to fight on the G H conflict, with a true Son at The Helm.

A Chelsea man appointing a Fulham man by two American owners while the ex Liverpool manager who wants the job is being overlooked.

Truly this has turned into some Monty Pythonesque sketch....how sad that my beloved club has descended into the farcical and it is truly killing me to see how they (Yanks) have destroyed our club and are continuing to do so on a daily/weekly basis.

PLEASE LET IT END AND WE FIND NEW OWNERS

If the Liverpool Board appoint anyone but Dalgleish they do so knowing that they go against the wishes of the vast majority of the highly knowledgable football supporters who want rid of the Americans.
If that happens players will go, the Club will flounder and it's sale value plummit. These Americans just do not understand the personal and life long passion of British football supporters, if they continue the way they are the massive support at games will dwindle and the unique Anfield atmosphere without them will die too.
It has to be Dalgleish even if it is only as caretaker until they have found a better candidate.... Roy Hodgson, good though he has been for Fulham, is not the man.and never will be.

Didn't Kenny walk away after a 4.4 draw with Everton because of the pressure of the job? So what happens if we lose first game to Arsenal ?
We need to take a look at ourselves as fans and realise Kenny was the best player we have seen in a Liverpool shirt but next manager ?
No a fresh start somebody to steady the ship and work with the players and Purslow etc and get Liverpool where they belong pushing for titles etc.

Is Hodgson the man ? I think yes & whoever gets the job lets get behind him and not moan about it.

I agree that Dalglish's standing at the club might placate Torres, Gerrard, etc., in the short term, but are people honestly suggesting that he currently knows more about football than Hodsgon and is a more suitable candidate for the job? He's been out of the game for a decade.

Hodgson has won league titles and has also managed successfully at international level - qualifying for USA 94 with Switzerland from a group that included Italy and Portugal, and getting them out of the group stage at the finals. He also got the Swiss qualified for Euro 96 before quitting to take charge at Inter Milan.

His knowledge and experience of world football is second to none. The majority of English fans only know about his record in England, but that only tells a fraction of his story.

Yes, he was poor with Blackburn, but he inherited an aging, sinking ship left by Dalglish and Harford (not a million miles away from the aging squad in need of overhaul that Dalglish left at Liverpool). He took over at Fulham when they were near certainties for relegation in December 2007 - and within 18 months they had qualified for Europe. Then, last season, he takes them to the final of the Europa League.

The club are facing a very difficult decision. Hope they get it right.

Didier Deschamps? What next just appoint Hodgson and lets put an end to this charade.

Speculation has been rife over who will take charge at Anfield since Rafael Benitez left the club at the beginning of the month, with Kenny Dalglish and Roy Hodgson among the current frontrunners.

However, Dassier claims Deschamps is the man Liverpool want.

"It's true, Liverpool's executive director, Christian Purslow, called me Thursday morning," the OM president told L'Equipe. "He speaks French very well, is very polite.

"I was expecting his call because I had heard of Liverpool's interest in Didier. He asked me if I would allow him to meet Didier and (agent) Jean-Pierre Bernes.

"I replied that I would never forbid anyone from meeting whoever.

"I also kindly indicated to him that there wasn't the slightest chance for him to pinch our coach. Even in his dreams."

Deschamps' contract runs out at the end of next season and he is yet to pen an extension.

However, Dassier is confident of keeping the former Marseille midfielder.

He continued: "With Didier, we have a trusting relationship.

"I hope he will commit himself to us for another year. I'm not worried.

"It's true also that Didier is flattered to see a great European club interested in him."

Deschamps is regarded as one of Europe's best young managers and has had an impressive start to his career since taking over the reins at Monaco in 2001.

He steered the principality side to the Coupe de la Ligue title just two years after taking his first managerial post and led them to the Champions League final the following season.

The former France international, who won the World Cup and European Championship in an illustrious playing career, then helped Juventus to the Serie B title in his one season at the Bianconeri.

The 41-year-old took charge at Marseille last summer and led them to their first Ligue 1 title in 18 years.

PostSubject: Re: King Kenny steps down as Kingmaker   King Kenny steps down as Kingmaker EmptyTue 29 Jun 2010 - 10:42

Roy Hodgson is expected to be in place as Liverpool manager on Thursday — and his first job will be to field formal offers for the club’s crown jewels, Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres.

Real Madrid have tabled a £20 million take-it-or-leave-it bid for the England captain, whom Liverpool value at £35 million.

Torres, the Spain striker, would cost in excess of £60 million, but Chelsea and Real are aware that Liverpool’s precarious financial situation allows the opportunity to acquire their players at knockdown prices. There were suggestions last night that the London club’s initial offer could be as low as £25 million.

Hodgson, 62, who took Fulham to the Europa League final last season, will be consulted over any decision to sell, but can expect to receive only a small proportion of any money raised.

Liverpool are expected to have to pay Fulham about £2 million in compensation for the services of Hodgson, who would also have been a candidate to become the next England manager should the Football Association decide to part company with Fabio Capello.

The Italian said yesterday that the FA wanted two weeks to think about his position, but by then Hodgson will be installed at Anfield.

Liverpool needed to act quickly because only Sammy Lee remains from Rafael Benítez’s coaching staff. Benítez left Anfield on June 3 by mutual agreement with a £6 million payoff.

Hodgson can expect a muted reception from the fans, especially since his appointment will raise questions about the future of Kenny Dalglish.

The former manager and club icon was charged by Christian Purslow, the managing director, with finding a successor to Benítez. After assessing the candidates, the Scot put himself forward for the job, despite a longstanding friendship with Hodgson.

Internal politics may be the least of Hodgson’s problems at Anfield, however. Despite Tom Hicks and George Gillett Jr, the co-owners, putting Liverpool up for sale in April, there is no buyer on the horizon. The club owe £351 million in loans, mainly to Royal Bank of Scotland, which is irritated with the Americans’ inability to sell.

Martin Broughton was brought in as chairman to oversee the sale, but Hicks’s asking price of £600-£800 million has caused a number of potential investors to walk away.

Liverpool close to appointing Roy Hodgson as new manager
Liverpool are set to unveil Roy Hodgson as their new manager on Thursday, according to reports.

On the brink? Roy Hpdgson is understood to be close to agreeing a deal with Liverpool Photo: PA The 62-year-old has been the favourite to replace Rafael Benítez since the Spaniard left Anfield in June. And with the Liverpool board granted permission to hold talks with Hodgson by his current club Fulham, the BBC claims that a deal is now only dependant on both sides agreeing a compensation deal.

"Hodgson has always been the number one target of the board at Anfield to replace Benítez," said Ian Dennis, BBC Radio 5 live's senior football reporter.

"After Fulham granted Liverpool permission to speak to Hodgson, it was just a matter of the clubs agreeing a compensation deal for him."

Should the latest reports prove to be accurate, Hodgson would be the first of a number of names to be discounted from the possibility of replacing Fabio Capello as England manager.

The increase in demand for Hodgson comes as little surprise given his run off success in the last two seasons.

But despite being named manager of the year by the League Managers Association in May this year, Hodgson did not enjoy the most successful of starts to his tenure as Fulham manager.

The 2007-08 season saw the club staring down the barrel of relegation which they avoided on the final day of the season.

Since, Hodgson has guided the club from strength to strength. They ended the following season in seventh place – their best ever finish in the top-flight – and last season finished as runners up in the Europa League.

Didier Deschamps, Kenny Dalglish and Manuel pellegrini have also been linked with the job.

This has been taken as a bit of an insult. It has certainly not added to Hodgson's popularity on Merseyside, and he already needs all the friends he can get. Hodgson's derogators are mistaken, though. For far from being his dream ticket, Liverpool could turn out to be his impossible job.

Indeed, the only way he can make it work is if he stays strong now, lays down some guidelines and plays a little hard to get. He already risks walking in the front door as club legend Kenny Dalglish exits through the back, making him the home wrecker in the eyes of most Liverpool fans.

Hodgson will need a stunning first season to overcome that stigma as it is. The moment Dalglish asked to be a candidate, rather than a member of the steering committee that would appoint the next Liverpool manager, the currency of the post was devalued.

What should have been the most sought-after position of the summer - for who would not initially have fancied improving on last season's position of seventh - became a poison pill.

Dalglish may have been acting with the best intentions - if he thinks he is a better candidate than those he is assessing, why shouldn't he put his name forward? - but the way he did it placed the club in an impossible position and he should have realised that, too.

Maybe he understood but didn't care. Maybe he thought if the news leaked out that he was interested, the groundswell of local support would leave the board no choice but to appoint him. Only Dalglish will know at which point, if any, sincerity and the works of Machiavelli overlapped, but the effect has been to make the Liverpool job a more awkward proposition for every manager, bar him.
Could Dalglish do the job? Yes. He would command instant respect in the dressing room, and adoration from the stands. He is still involved in the game as a club ambassador and head of the Kirkby Academy, and was said to have held very firm opinions on where the fault lay during Rafael Benitez's final season.

He would not be entering from the periphery as Kevin Keegan did when he misguidedly returned to Newcastle United. And his record is magnificent. He won the league three times with Liverpool, and once with Blackburn Rovers, an achievement that grows greater with each year. Neither club have fared as well since his departure.
Liverpool have difficult times ahead. Significant players could leave this summer and the resources are not there to replace them, or to carry out the rebuilding process that is vital. It is going to require a great deal of patience from the supporters and no manager is better equipped to extract that loyalty and understanding than Dalglish.
Overlooked, however, he could be the worst enemy the new manager will have. This does not even have to be his intention. Just by not being Dalglish, the next man is disadvantaged.

So if the leading candidate is not sprinting towards Anfield, is it any wonder? Hodgson will be aware of the timeline, of the fact that Dalglish put his name forward after Hodgson had emerged as a strong contender, perhaps the earliest vote of no confidence in history.

Hodgson will know, too, that Dalglish is hugely influential at Liverpool; that he sits in the directors' box for most games and has powerful allies in the local and national media. His is an important voice. To have Dalglish in opposition would be a disaster for any Liverpool manager.

Hodgson's choice: Some observers have been surprised by Hodgson's decision to continue with his BBC World Cup duties
Hodgson is stuck between the devil and a deep red sea. If Dalglish remains, his presence may not be entirely helpful, if he leaves in protest at being ignored - an idea floated this week - Hodgson could not have made a more unfortunate start had he suggested ground-sharing at Goodison Park.

Lose any combination of Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres and Javier Mascherano this summer, and Hodgson could take Graeme Souness's title of least popular Liverpool manager before a ball is kicked.

Any other business? The alleged approach to Marseille for coach Didier Deschamps, said to have taken place on Thursday. Jean-Claude Dassier, the Marseille president, claimed he spoke to Purslow and refused permission to open talks with Deschamps and his agent Jean-Pierre Bernes.

Hardly going all out to make Hodgson feel wanted, are they? Deschamps is a World Cup-winning captain turned title-winning manager and may be seen as a better fit than the humble Hodgson, but his appointment would still be a snub for Dalglish, and would raise the same issues; and Deschamps would not even have the saving grace of Hodgson's knowledge of the Premier League to guide him through the first season.
At any other club in Liverpool's position, Hodgson would be a fine choice; and at any other time, Liverpool would be a fantastic opportunity for him. Not right now though.
This is a tough job, made doubly difficult by the involvement of Dalglish which is why, if it is to be Hodgson, he must take his time. Further delay will not endear him to supporters, but it is only right he knows where he stands.

What are Dalglish's intentions? How much influence will he have if he stays? Who is to be sold, who will remain? What is the financial position? Hodgson should not be expected simply to be grateful for his chance. He might not be King Kenny, but he is too good to be taken for a mug.
