| Michael Shields bientôt libre ?! |  Mer 17 Déc 2008 - 15:39 par Munegu d'Elsass | Michael Shields today won a key battle in his fight for freedom after the High Court told justice secretary Jack Straw he could grant a pardon.
The 22-year-old Liverpool fan is serving a 10-year sentence for the attempted murder of a barman in Bulgaria in 2005, but has always maintained his innocence.
High Court judges have now ruled that UK ministers have the power to issue a pardon to Shields despite the conviction taking place abroad.
Mr Straw previously insisted he did not have such powers.
Standing outside the family's Liverpool home, Shields' father, Michael, said: "Jack Straw is now the man with the key to the door and I'm asking him to get my son out."
Liverpool Football Club supported Shields earlier this month with a Kop mosaic versus West Ham.
