Jamie Carragher's first appearance in a red shirt was the only positive on a night when Liverpool stumbled out of the League Cup at the hands of Middlesbrough. The Reds defender, who is just two matches short of making his 500th appearance for the club, came on as a substitute in the 75th minute after replacing full-back Rob Jones. By this time Roy Evans' side were already on the verge of a fifth round exit down by the Riverside, after goals from Craig Hignett and Steve Vickers had put the hosts in control. Steve McManaman gave the Reds a lifeline on 65 minutes but it would prove too little, too late for the five times winners as they fell to a 2-1 defeat.
